Trying not to be patronising here.

First make a copy of all the folders on your Skoda SD card to your PC as a backup of your maps folder on the card.

Then you can read these instructions.

You have to know the size of your SD card (windows will show it) to know which map file you can fit on it.

Formatting the SD card does not erase the special file Skoda have on it to know it can work in the car. You cannot put map files on any other card.

Ok. Back up done to desktop. SD Card formatted. Size is 7.5gb. Thanks for the link but I thought I was columbus and not Amundsen.

Ok. I have gone to the skoda link and entered my VIN as below

I don't think we actually established Amundsen or Columbus...sorry I don't know what two SD and cd player model you have.

Download whatever map you can fit on the card you can see listed,  once your vin was entered on Skoda Portal.

It shows the maps highlighted in green if can download one. But petroldave hinted 5 year life for downloads.

That's why I asked the OP to send a pic of the part no and software version

Currently extracting the data to my SD card. Why is this all so slow?  It said I needed no other updates when I entered my VIN. Is this bit below important to download? Website is a bit vague.

Yes extract can take a while. Logos aren't that important. I've never updated them as they are all ok.

Ok so all copied but when taken to the car, the sat nav just said checking data for ten minutes before I froze to death so no success yet. Format of data was on the card after loading wasn't like the below e.g. MIb1, metainfo2 etc. Does it take a long time for the 'stereo' and SD card to sync etc?

Good job we backed up old data then. SD card "locked" again with the slider bit?

I've not seen "checking data" before on mine sorry. The only other thing I can remember in other threads with issues was using Mac to format card doesn't do it properly or the format type used initially.

Actually i just crosschecked the structure against the back up and looks the same, sorry red herring. No, i didn't lock the SD card again. Does it matter? I thought it was a bit like the punch tags on the old cassette tapes!

Yes, it works! I slid the 'locked' thingie! thanks guys

Excellant glad you got there with it, well thats logged for the memory bank for next time, "lock the SD card" .

Triple hourly rates charged to my Swiss bank account please ....☺️

The whole thing is so painful. And this is one of the reasons I haven't caved in to my son's demands and bought a tesla. I just imagine they are full of technology that I would never use!

indeed, even with all the posts on this subject and the guides other have written for us (thanks to those for the contributions) something can always trip it up!

did you ever get round to finding the part number from my photos, then you can know if MIB 1 or MIB 2 unit as your year has a changeover of parts depending on the build date?

I thought the locked position was just to stop the card from being overwritten. I'm going to try mine in both positions.

Me too how that would make it work / not work is strange

I never locked the SD card after updating the maps on my MIB1 Amundsen, always worked in the car with the slider in the unlocked position?

No, I just entered my VIN to the website and it told me I was Amundsen 2 so ran with it.

Yup me too like the old cassette tapes when you put cellotape over the holes. Maybe I didn't push it in properly the first time, who knows!

Sat nav works just fine after a long drive albeit it's still in yards and not metres which they clearly haven't changed.

If you want satnav to display metres you could change your system setup "Units" to km.

Press Menu button,

Scroll left or right to"  Setup".

Scroll down to "Units" change from miles to km.

This will put the dash odometer to km I don't think you can have just the Nav in metres.

I remember that's the problem. They can't be separated. Crazy right?
