Just had a Service...should I be concerned?

Featured Replies

Hi

We have a 2020 Karoq and on the whole love it, but for a while the Infotainment system randomly reboots itself or crashes where we then have to reboot it. Picked up an OBD device to use on another car so thought I'd take a look at the Karoq to see if anything would be recorded for that issue and anything else.

To my surprise it pulled up 22 issues, some of the serious but nothing specifically about the Infotainment, however it was only a couple of days before it went in for its scheduled service, covered under the service plan we picked up when we bought it.

Now I will admit when I dropped it off for its service I couldn't stop so didn't mention any of the issues, assuming they'd plug in an OBD too and see everything. When I picked it up nothing was mentioned about any problems found so again assumed it would have all been reset and resolved.

I've just plugged the OBD back in to have a nose and to my surprise there are still lots of errors, some deemed serious, glow plug circuit issues etc.

So my question is, is it right that a scheduled service comes with the pointless video of the mechanic saying they've checked the car...but not actually checking or investigating codes via an OBD which surely should be part of any service?

Or am I being harsh?

It almost feels like a service plan is just cash for a little as possible and nothing more than a visual check.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice.

It should be part of an Oil & Inspection service that they check it on the diagnostics.

& Carry out any software or hardware enhancements.    But sadly Service Plan Fixed Service regimes seems to be an excuse for Dealerships to do an Oil & Filter service and maybe a look see.

Best get the car booked in and give them notice of faults, failures or issues that need addressing under the warranty.

?

Does your Service Plan show a 'Oil Service' and then an 'Oil & Inspection Service'?

So only an 'Oil & Inspection Service' at 18,000-20,000 miles / 24 months.

You need to be careful about what is meant by an 'Oil and Inspection Service'. If you are on fixed interval regime then they fall at the same time, and are done together. If you are on a variable interval then they can become due at different times - the Inspection is annual but the Oil Change service is the variable part. An Inspection Service costs about £55 and I do not believe it includes a diagnostic check. I don't know which of these options is included in a service plan (probably the minimum possible), but it might explain why the errors were not checked/commented on/cleared.

The 'Inspection Service' flashing up is a total nonsense.    Pretty much a UK think with Fitters / Techs at the PDI not setting the Service Indicator correctly.

A few years back some Skoda Main Dealers were quoting £85 for an 'Inspection'  which was the Body / Corrosion Inspection to keep the Warranty Valid.

This is not a T&C in the Warranty that an Inspection & Report should be done Annually or B-Annually.

Back when there were Service Books there was a Page after the Service Page to fill in showing the 'Inspection' and any damage.

So that is nearly 10 years since that ended.

RootToot, you are spot on. When I was with Kia, I had a service book. It did have different pages for different service acquirements. Also informed you what they needed to do at every service. A very upfront way of telling what was involved and completely above board.

Skoda are not very open as what a service involves. Not a practice I like.

On 19th Jan, CJW  asked if a service plan is nothing more than a visual check.

You are very optimistic, sir!

The "free" visual health check that came with my service, included precise measurements of tyre tread depth,

and the assurance that the spare "kit" is "OK"

Maybe the inspector was troubled, because that "kit" is round and black and looks to me, remarkably like a spare wheel.

Basically, we pay the money to keep the warrenty.

And we needed the warrenty to fix the aircon which literally fell apart a few hundred miles from new.
