Smell of petrol in the cabin - any ideas?

Featured Replies

Noticed recently that the cabin smells of petrol after a period of no use, any ideas on what could be the issue?

I've previously asked for the carbon evap canister for the fuel tank to be checked at the time of the last service in August but no issues were found. Also not had any error messages on the dash and no leaks by the rear right hand side wheel well.

Car is a 2016 Superb 280.

Any ideas welcomed - thanks!

My 2019 Sportline was doing the same, didn't matter if the tank was full or empty etc. The local Skoda dealer said it was the fuel filler flap, so replaced it under warranty.............. that was only last week and so far no more fuel smells............ I think it was a load of tosh they told me and as a warrenty job I didn't get any paperwork.

Nots Sure about IN the cabin, but for around the fuel filler smell check the rubber surrounding the pipe where is emerges. It can ride up and obstruct the filler cap sealing, but still seems to 'lock' on.

First time I had this issue the dealer removed rear seat base to look at the fuel gauge sender seal.

Not sure how exactly one could be checked except for a visual check, i doubt they would go to the trouble of smoke/vacuum checking the system for leaks.

Probably a cursory glace over it and no fuel leaking so say its okay.

Thanks all, have bought the evap canister online and will get my indy to replace it and have a look around at other possible sources when it arrives in a week or so

Sorry thread revival. My 190tsi has started to wiff of petrol too. There are no drips, leaks or visable signs that I can see. @ChrisChDid the evap cannister sort it?

To be honest I never fitted it as the smell went away on its own. I think diddling with the rubber seal around the petrol filler hole made the biggest difference

Thanks @ChrisCh and @Chazzy  you were on the money. 10 second with a torch and a push of the seal around the neck and all is well.  A bit of a design flaw really, but easy enough to fix.
