can you syphon petrol straight fro the petrol tank using a tube fed through the filler ?...

(how long a piece of tube?)

or is the an easier way ....via the fuel pipe to the engine..?

Easy if there is no anti-syphon device, you can do the same to syphon from any container.

 

4-5 foot of a tube or longer. feed string through it and tie a bit of cloth at the end.

Feed tube down the filler tube into the tank. 

Draw the string through which draws up the petrol and get the end of the tube into what ever you are filling the fuel into.

I always found it easier from the sender under the rear seat when our Golf Mk5 was written off. Engine bay also an option fuel filter area or pipe coming from fuel tank. Using a manual siphon pump. You don’t mind leaving it not working when car is to be taken away. Depends if your car is still a runner how much damage to pipes and fuel lines you can do. Important petrol especially is very dangerous and fumes can be ignited by a spark proceed with caution. Diesel not as bad but still be careful. 

Not easily, no. The easiest way is to take the pipe off the filter and run the fuel pump (either via bypassing the relay or flicking the key many, many times).
