TSI 1.5 oil specification changes

Featured Replies

I just got my 2019 Karoq TSI 1.5 DSG 4x4 back from its third annual official service. On both previous instances Castrol 5W-40 had been used, while today they used the 0W-20.

To my remark that I would have rather stayed with 5W-40, as I feel uneasy with such a thin oil as 0W-20, they replied that the factory has changed the engine oil specifications.

New to me was also the info that when the Haldex clutch oil is changed, the related oil filter also needs to be cleaned.

(Just a hint to the DIYer.)  :)

My engine oil level light has just come on and i've only had the car for 1 year. The label on the engine cover states VW 508/509 SAE 0W-20 oil to use....but i'm surprised it has used so much oil in 1 year. I assume the oil tank was full when it left the factory!

I've purchased some top up oil - Mobil 1 0W-20 but this oil may go quickly.......

It’s always been necessary to clean the Haldex filter- unfortunately Skoda did not admit there was even a filter there and just  the changed oil. This led to many Haldex failures where despite oil change the still blocked filter caused them to fail catastrophically.

Some dealers were more proactive and the filter was cleaned on my Yeti 2 years ago when that had its Haldex serviced. I asked for it to be done and they said it was always done there. To access the filter the Haldex has to be drained and then opened.

Hello HMS, welcome to the forum. The low level light will come on with around one litre of oil used - contents of engine oil sump is around 4 to 4.5 litres, so around 25% used - do you not check oil level more than once a year?

You’ll never know how much oil has been lost if you have never checked it in a year, and you are assuming it was at the correct level post pdi .

How much oil did it take to return to correct level?

@HMSWoofDog Welcome to the forum.

Worth reading the owners manual on Driving in / running in a new car and also on oil.

The Owners Manuals have been saying the same thing for more than a decade on the oil use in the first 5,000 km.
