Oil pressure - what to check next?

Featured Replies

Last week I had my oil warning light come on. I dropped the sump and found the pickup pipe was pretty badly clogged so replaced this, bolted everything back together, and all was well for around 100 miles. On the way home from an event on Sunday the warning light flashed on again as I came out of a roundabout, then went out. I did about 30 miles or so along a dual carriageway without any problems, engine temp was rock solid, then, exiting another roundabout the light came on again and went back out after flashing 3 or 4 times. The final roundabout I came to I guessed the light would come back on and, sure enough, it did.

Each time it seemed to be when I was turning left. Although it's a pretty rare failure I thought it might be the oil level sensor playing up, so today I fitted a new one. I went out for a quick test drive of about 10 miles and all was going well until I was virtually home and the warning light came on again. Perhaps the fact that it came on when turning left is just a coincidence.

So, what should my next step be? I can't imagine the oil pump is faulty as it's around 200 miles now since the warning light first appeared, and there was no sign of any metallic sheen to the oil that I drained this morning. I'd surely have had catastrophic failure by now if the pump had been the issue. Thanks for any suggestions.

Oil filter? It's fairly cheap, and a clogged filter could give these symptoms.
