Felicia 1.6 snapped timing belt!!!!!!

Help!!!!

My Felicia 1.6 GLXi,s timing belt snapped on me the other day:weeping: :weeping: !

I have replaced the belt but it doesn't work, when I turn the key it still sounds as though the belt is snapped, a lot of spinning but no action.

It feels as if the pistons are not connected to the crankshaft as it turns with a spanner with little resistance.

I'm no mechanic but I would expect to be able to feel the pistons moving when I turn the crankshaft, as is the case when I turn the camshaft and can feel the valves spring into place.

Does anyone know if there is a shear pin within the crankshaft mechanism that might have went because of the snapped timing belt?? Or if I am looking at something a lot more serious?

If there is a shear pin, is it accessable via the sump???

I am currently searching through my Haynes manual to try and find out if there is any reference to this but it seems to fall short of major problem solving.

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers

Sorry mate, but the reason the engine spins over easily is because there is no compression. When the timing belt breaks the valves that were open remain open, but the pistons keep moving up and down till either the clutch is pressed or momentum is lost. Result being, pistons hitting valves. You'll have bent valves at the very least I'm afraid. You'll have to remove the cylinder head to assess the damage.

:) No need to scrap it mate, if it's only got bent valves it's still worth doing if the rest of the car is in good order. Probably the easiest thing to do is get a secondhand head, it's the AEE engine as fitted to the Polo.

could look into it. It looks complex though (never worked with fuel injection before). It's still got plenty of mot and tax so I've got a couple of months to try.

Cheers & Thanks

Stu.

there are about 20 different engines with different codes which have the same cylinder head.

:) even better

except the early diesels that have the same AEE code, when it should be AEF
