Headlight Adjustment

Featured Replies

Had my lights adjusted at the dealer t'other day but illumination seems very low on the road so I was going to 'lift' them a little but have noticed there are two adjusters on each lamp. Can anyone tell me what they do and what rotaion does what.

I have also noticed a third adjuster on the top of the headlight housing (not shown in the photo) and have no idea what that does either, perhaps you could shed some light (excuse pun!) on that too.

The "adjusters" you've indicated look to me more like the bolts that hold the headlamp in place!!

The adjuster on the top of the headlight (usually white) is the one you want, but double check it is the up / down adjuster and not the left / right adjuster first (if there's only the one, it'll be up / down).

I'd recommend having this done at an MOT testing station though so you don't end up with the headlights too high - unless you have access to another car with headlights at a similar hight off the ground set to a level you like, at which point marking out the beam patterns on a wall is suffcient. Personally, I don't know why VAG set the headlights illegally low as standard - my Leon required 4 full turns of the adjustment screw to get the lights legal when I bought it, an adjustment I mirrorred on several other SEAT's (although I've yet to have a Skoda driver ask me to check and adjust!).

One question - do you have xenons? Believe there's some vag-com re-setting required if you do...

No, I don't have xenons and the 'bolts' I have indicated definately adjust the headlight (I took the whole headlight assembly out to check), one adjusts up and down the other left to right.

I think you are right though, take it to an MOT station and get them aligned properly and watch 'em do it for future reference.

Cost me £5 at my local station ;)

Told them I felt the headlights were too low and they agreed they were illegally low... this after I'd asked the dealer to check them!!
