Clunking from front end

Featured Replies

When driving over uneven surfaces across the road I am hearing what sounds like a clunk/chatter, which sounds like metal to metal. This started 4 days ago and seems to be getting worse. It only happens when I hit an uneven surface across the road when both front wheels hit it. I also have the famous creaking when going over high speeds humps but that is hardly noticeable in comparison to this new clunking.

Reading other posts it seems like it could be sway bars or suspension top bushes.

Does anyone know what it could be and the fix and if it will be an expensive repair?

The sooner you have it inspected and repaired by a competent person the cheaper it will be.

Do not put that off, any guess here will just be that since you have read the other threads.

Everyone could give you ideas and guesses on a forum but thats all they would be. Youll need to take it to someone in person for a sure 100% diagnosis.

Update - I should have mentioned in my OP the car had new front discs and pads only a few days before the clunking started, these were Brembo. Anywhay my mechanic stripped the pads out to check them and could not see anything causing the issue so refitted and we test drove, the clunking is still there so he has ordered sway bar links which will be fitted tomorrow.

I questioned why my car would start clunking afetr new discs and pads are fitted and was told when the car is lifted up that it puts stress on other components and this could have damaged the sway bar links.

I read somewhere else online that some after market brake pads require a fitting kit, not sure if this is the case with Brembo pads?

I also had some annoying clunking from the front when on uneven roads (more like rock paved roads) and noticed this went away when pressing the brake pedal. Skoda said it was loose pads (factory ones, with very little wear!) and quoted over 100€ to install some "anti-noise foil". I obviously told them to bugger off. in the meantime I had the discs resurfaced and, even with the same pads, the noise went away.... Maybe the springs that hold the pads in place got stuck in the caliper carrier and would stay loose when no force was being applied. Don't know... Fact is, the factory pads did have a backing layer meant for noise reduction, so I'm unsure what Skoda meant by installing these additional and costly foils...

Another update, seems Brembo pads might be the cause:

Personally I wouldnt go anywhere near brembo aftermarket friction materials. They are not the same as Brembo calipers and hydraulics. The pads and discs are shocking quality...

Ill give you a little inside tip - When we used to use eurocarparts they had massive incentives to make garages buy Brembo, such as biggest discount, rewards and such... Even with all that I wouldnt fit them on my own car. OE or Pagid are my go to for standard cars.

Update - the sway bar links have been replaced today, the clunking has almost gone except for driving over very rough surfuces where the clunking is still there. My mechanic suspected something to do with the shockers, so is going to check them next, so car will be going back in. Just annoying all of this happens at the same time the discs and pads are replaced.

What is so bad about Brembo? I thought they are fitted from factory to some cars like Porsche? or is it just aftermarket that are rubbish? I remember back 30 years ago driving around in my XR2 Mk1 that Brembo was the best in braking!

That’s why I specify aftermarket :) Most manufacturers you won’t ever see Brembo friction material on their cars from the factory, all seems to be TRW or other brands.
You’ll have brembo calipers and such which are second to none, but the actual pads generally aren’t.

It seems that all the brembo **** that eurocarparts sell is exactly that, ****. From personal experience i can tell you I’ve had many a car come back with brembo pads on it for either knocking on the pads or bad squeaking and it’s always blamed on carrier worn out or user didn’t bed them in properly, throw a different brand in there and there are 0 issues.

Hello, I have the same exact symptoms. What ended up being the issue?
