Gear Ratio Question

Featured Replies

anybody who has driven a 2.0 fabia will know that they are gutless and over-geared, i'm trying to get better acceleration by sacrificing top speed

i have a 2.0 fabia with a fnj gearbox code. does anybody on here who has access to etka know if there are any alternative crownwheel/pinion final drive assemblies available with a lower ratio. or is there an alternative gearbox of the same type from another model which has it already fitted.

I own the same car, I guess, and wold't call it gutless, it's very torkey but not sport tuned.

I would also love to have the gear rate lowered, and the engine tuned to be faster revving.

Is that asking for too much?

C'on you guys, can't anybody give us any ideas?

I believe that by just changing the final gear ratio the car would behave so much better, the only problem is I have no idea of how to do that:confused:

Hello,

If it is a VAG 2.0 8v and tranny like in the old Jetta or Golf maybe there would be a possibility of switching up gearboxes (or inner components) - possibly taking one from a 1990's model of one of the above. I've had several friends switch and swap parts on their golfs, jettas. etc... without too many problems.

With other VW products there seem to be almost limitless engine and trans options... Performance catalogue?

Just a thought...

Hope you guys figure something out.

yes i have done this on the 085 transmissions fitted to the polo's/lupo's, but it is a fairly difficult task. you have to swap the whole output shaft which has the drive pinion machined onto the end of it which drives the diff. there are many different final drive ratios available for these boxes ranging from 3.3:1 to 4.2:1. it is also worth noting that the first and second gear are not removable from the output shaft.

then i would change the fifth gear for somthing a bit more economic for the motorway. as a matter of interest for anybody wanting to do this, it is possible to swap the fifth gear in an 085 box without even removing it from the car.

anyway,

what i was hoping is that sombody who has etka could tell me what ratio are available or if there is an alternative box (ibiza/polo/etc) which would save me having to do gearbox surgery.
