Swapping 16” alloys for black steels?

Featured Replies

Currently driving a 2.0 TDI Octavia 3 with standard 16” alloys.
I'm happy with the ride comfort etc but I wanted to change the appearance.
option 1 is to get current alloys powder coated to matt black

option 2 could be to sell the current alloys (excellent condition) and replace with black steel wheels which might almost pay for itself (or at least be cheaper than option 1).

I’m sure I’m missing something here so feel free to explain / help

many thanks

Well, the alloys should cool the tyres and brakes better, leading to longer tyre and brake life. They may or may not also be lighter, leading to better acceleration, braking and fuel economy.

Most car alloy rims are made out of cast aluminium. Because sand cast aluminium is so weak a lot of material is needed to make it strong enough. Hence steel rims are usually lighter than sand cast aluminium rims.
