Specific fuel consumption read

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

The average fuel consumption guage in the dashboard, which show liters/100 km, on idle, it increases from 15, 15.3, 15.7, 15.9 and then goes down again 15.7, 15.4, 15.3, 15, and goes up again in similar manner. It increases and decreases in a matter of 15 seconds or so.

Have anyone faced this issue before?

Thank you

Hi,

what car have you got?

also those changes as a % are not exactly massive... if its over a journey its going to fluctuate more than that along the way, more moving around the more "unsettled" it will be.

changes in road gradient alone will alter it. i really wodnt worry about it

Hi mac,

My car is mk1 model 2003 auto gear wire throttle. The variation is not over a journey, it happens ina matter of 15 seconds or though, it goes up and down between 15 and 16 L/100 km.

While driving on straight road, it gets down to normal consumbtion.

The issue happens only while on idle

There was a similar thread a little while ago.

Can you be a bit clearer about the state of the car (stationary & idle or moving) at each point in time?

I would expect to see something like this...

Start engine (from cold) - high fuel consumption

Moving for 10 minutes at 40mph on a flat road - average fuel consumption decreases.

Stationary and idle for 2 minutes - average fuel consumption increases.

Moving for 10 minutes at 40mph on a flat road - average fuel consumption decreases

It would be strange for the average fuel consumption to decrease while stationary and idle.

When a car sits idling the 'Average' fuel consumption will eventually get down to maybe 11 MPG.  I have never seen one lower than that.  (I have thrashing one while driving and seen 9MPG)

That 11 mpg average is rubbish because if you leave it sitting idling long enough without moving to use 4.546 litres of fuel it will have gone ZERO Miles from a gallon.

Thank you for replying.

Well, while the car is moving, the consumption is normal, the issue appears after driving and then idling. While stationary and at idle, like stopping in traffic, i see the the consumption going up and down between 15 to 16 l/ 100 km, within 15 seconds or so and keep varying, untill I start moving again, only thenreading starts going down gradually

That is how it is, ticking over, battery being charged and giving some sort of reading, it would be boring if it read the same figure like the Coolant Temperature gauge.
