Air in 1.9sdi fuel line?

Featured Replies

Good morning,

My father in laws car, a 2001 1.9 sdi Octavia, konked out on his way to work.

The 'Service' indicator kept coming on but he said it seemed like a lack of fuel.

He managed to start it and get it home.

Yesterday I looked around it and found the oil was on the 'bottom kink' of the dip-stick, well below the shaded area...would this cause it to cut out, maybe as a fail safe?

I drained a bit of fuel from the filter and there was a bit of crud and a few droplets of water.

I changed his fuel filter and then the car took an age to start and when it did we noticed air being pulled through the clear pipe between the filter and fuel pump...is this normal??

The car starts and runs A1, no problems.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Water in the fuel filter is normal as that is what it collects as is the crud.

The car will take ages to start after the fuel filter is changed as you need to get fuel into the filter which is currently full of air. As for air in the pipe, have a look and see if it is still doing it. If not then nothing to worry about and since the car is out of warrenty then you may have just saved yourself a bill.

Of course if you are concerned hooking it up to a VAG-COM can't do any harm at all :)

There is usually a few bubbles of air going through the clear pipe, nothing unusual there.

Cutting out wont be anything to do with the oil, maybe a 109 relay playing up.

Ta, chaps.

There is still air in that clear pipe but the car is running sweet.

Thanks again.

As lumox said, check relay 109.

do a search on relay 109 and check the colour of the relay you have one colour is often a duffer and the other an uprated part.
