2018 vRS Tdi squealing

Featured Replies

Car started squealing this afternoon, seems to come and go. Sounds like an ancillary of some kind or a tensioner/idler. Is there a common issue with these engines which causes this noise?

TIA!

I know nothing but what I see in the video.

That said, it might be my imagination, but it seems like the noise (sounded like a repeating chirp rather than a squeal to me) was linked to engine RPM.

Does the frequency of the chirp increase with engine RPM?

Yes, absolutely - the frequency increases with RPM.

It really sounds like it's coming from something driven by that belt, but it's hard to say.

Hopefully one of the folks familiar with the vRS TDi engine will be more help, but anything I suggest would be a guess and that's no use to you.

Yes, definitely something driven by either aux or cam belt. It’s under warranty so I’ll book it in today, hopefully won’t have to wait to long - not keen to drive it on the off chance it’s cambelt related.

Good call booking it in ASAP.

I understand it's nice to have a good idea what the problem is before booking it in, as then it's harder to get fed a "They all do that, Sir!" line.

I only had to listen for 1 second to diganose 100% alternator pulley sprag clutch.
