Steering angle sensor gone after changing the pump

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I posted about a year ago about some PAS issues I had after presumably my dead battery caused havoc on the PAS. For context the initial diagnosis indicated "no communication from the power steering module", which lead me to following the advice of a recommended auto electrician by changing the pump. I brought it to a local mechanic who said he could source a pump from a recently broken fabia for £300. After replacing the pump the steering is still not working but now in a different way, it's still heavy but not as heavy as before, and if I turn the wheel fast (such as for a 3 point turn) the steering becomes extremely stiff. After months of silence from the mechanic he's finally looked at it again and now says the steering angle sensor needs replacing and wants £220. I'm not sure if I should trust this so anybody with advice that could ease my concerns would be greatly appreciated

A faulty angle sensor will usually throw a fault code and put on the PAS light, have you checked the fluid level, it sounds like it may need topping up after the pump change.

I checked the fluid level afterwards and it was a little high, I syringed the excess out but that was a long time ago. Yeah the light remained on after the pump was changed, also he said the diagnosis threw up 8 different fault codes, one of which was the sensor. He said he thinks the sensor is the reason for all of the codes and they should all go once its changed. Side note, it's got to the point where I'm not sure I want to continue with this car as there's been a few issues in the past that have been frustrating repairs. So I'm not sure if I should have it repaired and just move it on, although the mot has run out also so that's a bit of a hurdle with selling

There isn't anything else to go wrong with the PAS system so a new angle sensor will fix it.

It needs this repair to pass an MOT so unless you intend to sell it for spares or repairs you haven't much choice I'm afraid.
