the driver's window switch seems to work when it feels like it that's all the switches on the driver's door and the rear door. checked the fuses on the driver's side fuse box all fuses were ok and it worked then stopped again pushed fuses in and it worked again. any known loose connectors in that area.  

It's probably not the switch. Check the door loom wiring,  the wiring has probably broken and making intermittent contact. It's a common VW / Skoda fault with all the wiring circuits in that area of the loom. Usually the drivers door suffers the most as it's the door which opens and closes the most. The insulation looses it's elasticity becomes brittle then cracks and the copper wire inside works hardens and breaks.  There are lots of threads on here about it.

There is a door module in both the front doors which control the rear door modules. So if the front window stops working then it's likely so will the rear.

thanks for the help. i take it that's the plug inside the door that connects to the door switch. looks like a fun job over the Christmas holidays.

That's the plug that connects door loom to A-pillar in the hinge area; wiring within rubber/plastic bellows.

The loom repair kits are probably the quickest and most effective.. I was between jobs at the time and being a tight arse and bought enough cable to do all 4 doors though I only repaired the front door looms. I took the door cards off.

i will be looking at the wiring at the weekend if its the problem i will order the kit. over the Christmas holiday remove the door loom and get it on the bench for easy access then hope i can get it back together.
