2021 Estate Rear End Feels Loose

Featured Replies

It’s probably just the weather, wet roads etc. But the rear end feels unstable going round bends, it’s as though it’s bouncing around and going to spin out. It’s only a 1L Etec. Could it be a mix of the wet roads and a small engine with no weight pinning the car down. Previous 2 Octavias were 1.6 diesel, never experienced it with these.

@Jonop Start by checking the tyre pressures. Unless you regularly carry actual loads (say 2 rear passengers plus luggage), bring those down to the lower of the pressures in the fuel filler, and reset the TPMS.

Once the tyre pressures are checked and adjusted or even not adjusted remember and reset the TPMS.

I do have them quite high, 2.6 bar I think.

Yes. Unless I've got passengers and luggage, I keep mine at 32PSI (maybe 2.1 bar) and it feels pretty planted.

They do seem to need more pressure than most

Guessing your's is the 2nd entry here?

Check of course in fuel flap/ driver door for the car sticker approved for your car/spec/Country

Check rear springs don't have the transportation blocks left in them.  It could be you have a broken suspension component making the back end seem loose now.

@JonopWhat tyres did your car come fitted with?

ECO / Range extending, fuel saving,  low rolling resistance / low grip / low traction?

They’re 205 16”. Not checked the exact tyre type.

Hopefully these match sticker on car.

That’s approaching 38psi.. That’s high for an unloaded state.

I noticed mine adopts a slight skittish feeling on the rear with the higher psi, that’s suits when heavily loaded and towing, just not when light.

32/33psi feels about right on 16” rims, stock tyres in my opinion.

I should add, my opinion based on my current mk.3 diesel estate…. Can’t get my hands on the mk.4 as it’s exists only as an order!!!!!

My 2021 Octavia estate only ever felt ok with a full load of passengers/luggage. The torsion beam rear suspension always felt vague and loose no matter what tyre pressures I tried.

In fact the vague and wallowy handling was one of the key reasons we got rid of it and ironically the Kodiaq we replaced it with feels much better to drive, with far less roll in the corners and less tendency to bounce over uneven roads.
