Track rod thread sense check

Featured Replies

Hi,

The track rod threads on the Superb mk3 are standard right hand thread irrespective of which side of the car they are on correct?

i.e. They are not left and right handed

Thanks,

Correct yes. Held with a lock nut.

Are they seized? If so, warm it up till its extremely hot where it goes into the track rod end, then a dab of a candle on it, wicks the parafin down the threads.

Thank you for confirming.  I had a bad time this morning getting four wheel alignment and ended up with a steering wheel much further out of position than it was to begin with, so decided to get it roughly where it should be by doing equal amount of adjustment clockwise/anticlockwise depending on side with a view of getting it tweaked at another garage.  Steering wheel almost centred straight now ready to get the final adjustment by a (more) competent person later in the week.

I then had a minor panic moment in my mind that they might be opposing threads but I had put the car back on its wheels by this point and late in the evening!

Thanks,

Hi again,

Please see image below.  Are the toe angles for both axles correct?

IMG_0276.JPG

The toe in looks excessive on the NSR to me but I dont know what the limits are, usually it is shown on the print-out.

The overall rear toe may be correct (I suspect it isn't) but the vehicle is crabbing, the rear axle is not parallel to the front and I bet you are having to make a steering input for the vehicle to drive straight and that is why you thought the steering wheel was not straight, I would say you have paid for a 4 wheel misalignment but maybe it was that way before.

If driving in a straight line you remove your hands from the wheel does the car steer to the left? If so try again on an empty stretch of road while straddling the centre line to eliminate the road camber. With the misalignment its actually the rear axle steering (the rear of the car) to the right which changes the trajectory of the vehicle to the left.

Has the front crossmember been removed for a clutch or steering rack replacement.

Hi J.R.

The diagram has the figures displaying.

Toe

Camber

Castor (no reading)

Toe

Camber

Front axle total toe +1.48

Rear axle total toe +1.54

As these aren't shown as degrees like in camber, are they metric so in mm?

Thanks!

The toe is in mm I have discovered.  Just need to convert this into degrees reliably.
