Octavia 1.9 pd tdi 100bhp warm starting

Featured Replies

Hi all, when my octy is warm as in she's up to normal working temperature and I switch it off, I go back to her and when I go to start her again she seems to take a bit longer to start than when cold, would this be glow plugs or something else, she has done over 223000 miles.

It's a known problem with either a tired battery or failing camshaft/engine temperature sensor IIRC.

Go with the battery first, test by jump starting when hot.  If the start is immediate with the extra power and your battery is old, a new replacement will sort it but in reality it's nothing to be concerned about unless you're cranking excessively before a start in which case you are killing the battery, wiring and starter motor.

Essentially the engine is programmed to inject fuel immediately when starting cold but when hot, a certain engine RPM is required before fuel is delivered.  If your battery, associated wiring and starter motor aren't up to it then it will be hesitant to start.

Hi MicMac, the car has no problem starting only when warm, she seems sluggish, she always starts no matter how cold it is, but I'll get the battery tested. Thanks

If not battery, then I would go for camshaft sensor.  I had a similar issue with an ATD engine.  The fault code identified the sensor and changing it cured the problem. It also sometimes cut out at idle declaration before it was difficult to restart, which it cured as well.

Had a very similar issue with mine, which I resolved when I changed the starter motor.

I drove from Essex to Folkestone one night after work, stopped in Folkestone for about 3 minutes and it took forever to start the car again.

Found a seller on ebay with a recon motor, no need to return the old one either, for about 60 quid. Bargain, never had a problem with it since.
