MK3 Octavia 1.0 TSI emissions

Featured Replies

Hi- My above 2018 , 47k car has recently failed the mot on exhaust lamda after 2nd fast idle and exhaust carbon monoxide after 2nd fast idle. With no fault codes showing. I've found a number of these engines have been recalled due to injector problems but on approaching Skoda dealership they said mine wasn't on their list and all had been recalled so I'd have to book it in at my expense for investigation.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem and solution. Difficult to know what to change with no fault codes present.

Cheers, Benno

When was the last service?

How old are the spark plugs?

Has there been any recent deterioration in consumption, power delivery or starting?

It was serviced  prior to its mot in January. Air filter, oil, filter and brake fluid as per service plan. The plugs were changed Jan 2022 and the cars done 5000 miles since then all long runs. I've checked for air leaks but all seems fine. The servicing is done by a trusted ex-VW mechanic I've used for some years . He feels it may be an injector problem but not sure.

The car still returns 55-60 to the gallon and no problem starting, running.

Bit of a head scratcher when the car is running so well.

I wonder if you, or someone else here, can get more info about those 1.0tsi with injector problems to see whether it is actually applicable to your problem (despite the dealer denying it)

If it were one of the many sensors playing up then you would think there would be some sort of error message, but that is not guaranteed either.

Do they do emission testing during servicing in the UK and would it be recorded on their report? Or is the first emission test the car is subjected the MOT, when it is usually out of warranty?

So first 30 mins of a diagnostic at participating dealers is £60.    ?  Has this 1.0 TSI got a GPF.   If it needs fixed it needs fixed.    PS.  Re. RECALL,. Do they mean a Recall Action, Service Campaign, a TPI?  As there was no RECALL.  As in registered keeper informed to bring in their cars.    PS UK warranties 3 years.  First MOT at 3 years from first registered.  2018 car has had a MOT or 2.

EDIT.

I See that in February 2023 it shows as £100 for first 30 Minutes.

Gerrycan, emissions wouldn't get tested until a cars 3 years old here, during its first mot. I would expect emissions to be checked when the car leaves the factory. Previous  2 mots were OK.

Toot, interesting point regarding GPF, not sure if it has one or not. I do know the mot tester/mechanic drove the car hard for 12mls and retested emissions . Eventually he did just manage to just get it to pass but says there's a definite fault. He's doing more research to find the cause of the fault. I've attached a screen shot of the recall. Couldn't get the link to upload. Perhaps file to big?

Cheers

This is interesting. My car - 2016 Mk.III, 1.0 TSI - narrowly passed its MOT last month. CO emissions were right on the limit. It has since developed a juddering in first gear, when cold. The car has just under 50k miles, and does mixed city/motorway miles. It routinely returns between 50mpg (city) and 60mpg (motorway). Long-term average is 55mpg.

I am thinking there might be an issue with the lambda sensor, or perhaps carbon build-up in the admission valves. Probably the sensor, to be honest.

The car is going to the mechanic next week for diagnostic. Let’s see what they say!

Yes, it will be interesting to see the outcome. Have any fault codes appeared?

The cold engine juddering is also a mystery though perhaps it's due to fuel enrichment not correct.

Hopefully mine will be going in soon for investigation .

Yeah, my suspicion is that something is off with the fuelling, hence it might be a sensor malfunction. No warning lights on the dashboard so far, and I don’t have the equipment to check for error codes. Let’s see what the mechanic says!

Fill the tank with E5 97 or 99 ron minimum and see how things are if you are using E10.

Is the Air Filter clean / fresh, replaced,

and has it had new Spark Plugs?   Well due new plugs if not already replaced.

EDIT.

Sorry i was repeating myself.  But it still applies.   It is the basic stuff to do before going deeper into looking at issues.

Thanks for the suggestions . Especially E5

The plugs were changed on its  Jan 2022 service ,and filter prior to its mot in Jan 2023 as per your attached chart.

Hello! We had the same discussion about the issue in my car in another thread, but thank you for the reminder.

Can I ask what is the basis for trying the E5? The car is factory-ready for E10, I can’t see a reason why it would matter. But I am happy to be shown otherwise!

The car was factory ready for 95 Octane E5 or E10.

But if you are in the UK you were not using E10 before September 2021.

Last winter your E10 being sold might not have had 10% Ethanol in it, this winter maybe not either.

For an extra £3 or less to put in a tank of E5 it is worth a try since other having misfire issues this winter have felt the benefit.

The Petrol on sale in the UK just now since late October until March is Winter Formulation which should make no difference to how a TSI runs,

maybe even having them run better. There are mentions that they are not though, but then that might just be a coincidence and nothing to do with E10.

A higher octane can reduce emissions and not just with a GTI / R VW engine.

Perfect! Thanks for explaining that. I’ll give it a try.
