Air recirculation is useful in heavy traffic but I have noticed in both our Fabias it turns off after a few minutes. You can turn it back on of course but I was wondering, is this a timer to stop the car getting low on oxygen or a fault? 

A fault, I think.

The recirculation motor/potentiometer modules are renowned for failing on pretty much every mk1.

Think I've only ever put recirc on once out of curiosity when I first got the car back in 2013. I just leave it alone in case it jams or something

Twice, both times when about to penetrate a roadside fire smoke cloud.

A couple of times, usually when there's tarmac works or whatever. Also, it goes on automatically when you throw the car into reverse, which is something I only picked up on a little while ago.

Mine doesn't. Skoda seem to have decided that poverty spec owners are fair game to be gassed by exhaust fumes when reversing
