Pre-facelift drivers side mirror blindspot

Featured Replies

So I recently bought myself a MK2 prefacelift octavia scout, Im very pleased with it, but on the drive back on the motorway I noticed that I couldnt seem to direct the drivers side mirror far enough out, and Im wondering if thats just the nature of the car, or if theres something wrong with the mirror.

On every other car Ive owned, Ive had a clear vision of everything from the B-pillar forwards, with no blindspots and no need to look out of the back seat windows. Some people dont believe me, Ive told them to go and stand in my blindspot and Ive never failed to see them.

On the octavia, I cant seem to adjust the mirror far enough, and the side of the car seems to occupy about 25% of the mirror, resulting in a blindspot in the usual place. Have others noticed this before, or is ith just mine?

Thanks!

It might just be a sticky mechanism, don't be scared to simultaneously give the mirror a manual push as you adjust electrically.

Is that a 2-zone driver's side Octy mirror or a flat passenger side glass?

Push the mirror outer edge as it may still have more angle available in the mount for the glass. Then adjust the mirror back to your position of choice.

Please explain further? How could I tell? Thanks

For those saying push the mirror, it looks to me to be "all the way" or at least its the same as the other side, I think. Ill grab a picture in a bit

Here is an image of a typical drivers' mirror. You can see a dotted line on the glass in this version beyond which the mirror curvature is increased to show what is happening further out.  Octavia mirrors often have a solid rather than dotted line.

If you don't have this change of curvature then someone has used a passenger side mirror from a LHD car.

The glass is available by itself; you don't need to buy a complete mirror.

That's a passenger side mirror for an LHD car.

As I drive RHD cars in a country that drives on the right I need an extended "blind spot" type mirror on the left hand side, I thought that I was being clever with my MK2 Octavia when I found a LHD drivers door mirror and fitted it to the left side (passenger) door.

It was useless although if I sit in the left hand seat with my legs across to the pedals on the right and my arms across holding the steering wheel it works really well 🤣

I am posting this in case anyone else is as stupid as me and has the same bright idea!

If that picture of yours is still showing 25% of the side of the car, then I would say something else seems amiss, unless your seat is reclined as if you are in the dentists chair, Lol.

I have mine set to just see the side of my car and my mirror does not look to be pushed out as for as yours does. (assuming there's no difference between the normal Octy and the Scout)..

Your picture of the mirror looks like  it has some extra curvature on the right but only you can tell.

One final point is that your mirror may have a "knock back" mounting. Try to move the whole mirror assembly left and right in case it is has moved a little off centre.

I'm 6ft, so not a giant, and Ive got the driving position set how I like it (Seat base all the way down, steering wheel all the way back, seat adjusted so pedals are in the right place etc)

steering wheel all the way back,

Is this all the way back, meaning towards or away from you ???

The further you are sat back then the less effective the mirror will be especially for the blind spot.

I have checked my 55 plate estate (but not a scout) and the drivers side mirror has a solid line marking the curve, as @pikpilotsaid earlier.

All the way towards me. The seat can still go much further back I think, and its quite upright
