Lights question

Featured Replies

I am planning to buy a new Octavia estate 4X4 and have a question about how the lights work. I live in the Czech Republic (but I may buy the car in Germany because it is cheaper there). The Czech Republic has just passed a law requiring the lights to be on at all times. Would I be better off with or without the "Light Assistant?" If I keep the lights on constantly and leave them switched on when I leave the car, will they turn off automatically even without the "Light Assistant?" Or will the battery drain down?

I read a lot on the forum already -- also afraid if I get the "Light Assistant" it will be programmed for Germany instead of the Czech Republic.

Thanks.

You can change the lights with VAG com. so that they are on all the time.

By the way Welcome to Briskoda.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm not familiar with all the jargon -- what is VAG com?

Also, would it work for me not to get Light Assistant?

vag com is an aftermarket emulator of the the VAG diagnostic computer

The light assistant would work, but it is not on all the time, only at speed and when dark.

You can program the lights for daytime running, so they are on all the time, regardless of switch settings.

Easy enough to do with dealer equipment and should be able to set on pre delivery inspection.

If You keep the lights ON constantly, at the very moment when You turn the ignition OFF, the headlights will turn off, only the small bulbs will stay on, but as soon as You open the door (I think when You pulled out the key from ignition switch), a continous sound will alert You to turn the lights off.

I have light assistant. The automatic headlights arent great as they turn the headlights on sometimes during the day for no apparent reason although I never have to remember to turn my lights on at night. Once you have been driving at 90mph for 5 minutes or so or if your auto wipers go into high speed mode, the headlights automatically come on too although that's not particularly useful.

In any event, due to the laws in your country, the above benefits of Light Assist will not be available.

However the coming home and leaving home lights are invaluable as far as i'm concerned. You need light assist to get this functionality and don't forget to spec the maxidot computer if you want to change the light assist timing settings yourself.

Thanks for all the info. Final question then -- sounds like Light Assistant is not that useful for me since lights need to be on all the time.

Is there a way to set up the car so that the lights will always be on when driving and will completely shut off after leaving the car, even if the lights are switched on.

I've seen some American cars with this feature -- lights turn off completely by themselves after leaving the car.

I have light assist and proged for daytime running lights (comes from riding a bike) and they will do exactly what you want. They will shut down after a proged delay when you leave the car if it is dark or straight away if light.

No, the headlights will go off but the sidelights remain on. Light asist is the only way to do this i think.

No, the headlights will go off but the sidelights remain on. Light asist is the only way to just switch off the ignition lock the car and walk away knowing that your lights will go off completely.
