Car Locking by Itself

Featured Replies

I guess I should have expected this.

Fine advice as long as you have pockets in all your skirts and dresses.

My  randomly door locking problem......  after 8 diagnostic visits, umpteen garages to no avail was sorted by myself in the end,

wd40 and the child lock on the nearside back door turning it on and off with a flathead screwdriver multiple times sorted it,

Don't ask me how but sorted it 👌

So if you have recently put your door child lock on,  this may be your problem   hope it helps.

You're welcome.

You say it's happened twice and you wanted to avoid it happening again, so you got it based on what I do myself. I never place the key in the console or anywhere else in the car, it's always in my pocket. At least until you get it sorted, whatever receptacle you have with you that you wouldn't leave in the car, is a fit place to stow the key. Sometimes you have to go 'old school' to mitigate a problem.

BTW, this issue isn't unique to Skoda, it also happens with other makes.

It's been happening to me for almost 3 years! My younger one got locked inside the first time it happened; thankfully, I was around my home.

Tried mentioning it to Skoda, but they said there are no faults. I have given up and just make sure I never leave my key in the car! I have tried changing the key fob battery myself and Skoda changed it immediately afterwards (and charged me)...but it solved nothing! I have changed the battery so many times. Just before my service a month ago, it was happening almost always, but I left it with Skoda without saying anything. They seemed to have done something and the problem was 'solved' for sometime. It's starting to act up again now! So, obviously they know something is wrong.

On the other hand...when I forget to lock the car, it does not lock itself! I honestly don't know what to do!!

OK, I forgot to add an update.
The issue of a car locking itself when it thinks there is no key in the car (or low battery) is known by Skoda.
(I suspect the 'feature' is to do with the car being stolen by uing the key relay trick then locking itself when the criminals get out.) Skoda do have updated 'body computer' software to change the operation.
Strangely, the key recognition circuitry is MUCH more sensitive to a slightly low battery than the 'unlock the doors' circuits.
I approached my Skoda dealer prepared to argue the point but the service manager immediately said "oh, you are here for the recall then. We can do it now and clean the car for you for free." !!!
It appears that it is not a full safety recall and is only implemented when the car is serviced by Skoda or if you approach the dealer and ask for it. Seems to have cured the problem.
MKSOEF, the car will NEVER lock itself when you leave it. It will only re-lock if you have unlocked it but not opened a door. (Assumes you have pressed the key accidentally.)
Hope this helps.

Thank you 😊

So will they perform a firmware update?

Sorry, I don't understand the question.

Just a thought; If the car is unlocked and then locks is it possible the delay on the hatch might enable you access

IF you are quick enough!

  • I always keep my key with me after leaving it on my drivers seat once.

Boost951, thank you very much for all the information! I will check with my local Skoda dealer.

Unfortunately, what you have mentioned above, is not true for me.

Right now, I have stepped inside my house to take the shopping inside and also, put the things in the fridge, but my car has not locked itself in the last half an hour, though the key is nowhere close to it (there are other times it has stayed unlocked for even longer). Then, there are times at which, as soon as I unlock the car pressing the button, then open the door and sit in the driver's seat, the doors immediately lock and the mirrors fold!

It is so exasperating!

My car started locking itself while i was driving as well as when unattended.

So had enough of it and traded it in 🤔

I should have done it too! Unfortunately, I thought it was something that could be sorted out, like some initial problems I had which pretty much sorted themselves out, with a 'recall'! These problems only started a year and a half down the line and so, I thought they would be able to sort it out during the yearly check, which was coming up soon at that time.

UPDATE:
Now that the car won't lock me out with the key inside I now have moved onto the new problem of 'car locking and unlocking' when driving along.
I have 'personalisation' and when my wife was driving we could hear the car doors repeatedly being locked and unlocked. She had the option to lock the doors as you set off set to ON. (I do not so hadn't noticed this curious effect.)
One day ater messing in the boot I went to open the driver's door not being sure if I had unlocked the doors or not. The door opened and the alarm sounded (was silenced by pressing the key fob unlock button). Strange...
On closer examintion I realised that when I locked the car by key fob or Kessy door handle the doors locked but a few seconds later something unlocked. It was the driver's door! The alarm was set and the other doors were locked but not the driver's door. The dash red led was operating strangely.
I think it might be down to the driver's door not reporting that it is locked/closed resulting in the process opening the lock. Possibly a broken wire in the loom from the car to the door? (I have had this problem with the tailgate.)
Checked the connector on the cable from door to the car; seemed OK.
Wasn't best pleased that I couldn't lock the car.
Continued to mess and discovered that I could lock the car with the fob or kessy touch then, when the driver's door unlocked, I could lock the door in the old fashioned way with the key after removing the cover from the handle. Can't explain this.
So, before giving Skoda UK a whole stack of cash, has anyone else had this problem and found the cause?

I'll take a look and see if there's any fixes for this software wise, the update for the Kodiaq etc has done it's job so fingers crossed. Being different platforms, it'll be a different problem with a different fix.
