In which case, has the clutch pedal become any of very high, very low, or very spongy in operation recently? If so, which?

Does your clutch pedal feel and operate as expected?

If you can select gears without the engine spinning, but can't when it is, that kinda points to a clutch issue as a first port of call.

Nothing at all has changed this is what I can't understand Pedal is fine had no problems getting it in gear before it's absolutely fine apart from won't go in gear when running

Neither Ken all is fine apart from the obvious

Can you put it into gear, put the clutch down and then start the car? (Make sure there's nothing in front of the car if you try this - it could lurch).

If the clutch is okay, I'm wondering if there's a problem with your selector linkages, the release bearing or main mountings.

No liquids on the floor or engine undertray?

@LouA666l - @Gazand I are both thinking similarly, and indeed, now thinking that you have probably got a linkage issue. Check the adjustment and if that seems fine, new linkage.
