Sweet/sickly detergent smell coming from exhaust

Featured Replies

Hello. I recently bought a Skoda Yeti Greenline II and there is a sweet detergent almost sickly smell coming from the exhaust. I’ve been advised it could be coolant getting into the exhaust from the dreaded head gasket but I’m not noting any coolant loss in the reservoir. Any ideas what could be making the exhaust smell sweet?

Thanks.

DPF regeneration.

Mine usually smells of puke when regenning, sweet sickly sound like Adblue but I think your car is too early.

Maybe it had a head gasket replaced and is still burning the coolant condensate lodged in the silencer boxes.

The DPF cooler could also leak coolant into the combustion mixture, perhaps the intercooler.

You have not said what engine or fuel type your vehicle has.

It’s a 2014 1.6 TDI diesel on the Greenline II model

I can’t get the sweet smell out of my nose.

Would the fan not be making a racket when regenning? The car is silent.

Are the oil / coolant levels constant? How long are your journeys? I probably wouldn't worry about it unless you notice any secondary symptoms.

That brought it back to me, its funny how we recall the memory of a smell for so long.

It was my MK1 Octavia TDi and prior to that an Alhambra TDi, both pre DPF days, the smell was the rudimentary patricle filters  working after the vehicles had been laid up for some while which from what you have said could be the case with your vehicle as well. I did not even believe the vehicles had them until my CT guy showed me the box from under his ramp, he recognised the smell.

Maybe they were in fact catastrophic convertors?

I’m just taking it back now for a full refund. Can’t stand the sweet smell anymore!
