Will the Favorit / Felicia 1298 power train fit a Fun

Recommended Posts

Having no takers for my good salvaged Favorit parts which I advertised in the Classic parts section months ago, I am forced to the sorrowful conclusion that fellow enthusiasts have now become an endangered species in the UK, where the line seems to be continuing only in respect of Fun pickups.

Determined that good stuff should not go to waste, I must try to advertise more widely  .... as I took care to salvage the appropriate engine electronics, I wondered if the power train might also be suitable for Fabias  .... only to see (on Wikipedia) that a VW 3-pot 1198 was fitted to the early Fabias.

Does anyone here know whether the good ol' 1298  4-pot is suitable for Fabias?

Sorry to hear that the parts haven’t attracted much interest, I was musing over the market for these cars recently and though I’m in no doubt that the Favorit/ Felicia is being viewed as a classic, the pure economics of it have yet to kick into play and they’re not being seen as a viable or attractive proposition by the enthusiasts yet.

The prices that are being sought by some sellers are equivalent to Fords and VWs of similar vintage, when the demand for those far exceeds that for the Skoda. Is an average Felicia (very average and in need of some TLC) worth the same as an Escort LX in tidy condition? The two were on the market in the spring, Escort a 98, Felicia 97, both £1800 and from the pics, the Ford was in better condition

No doubt the Skoda sellers are playing the “rarity” card but for anyone at that end of the classic market, maybe looking for their first one, a Ford is going to look a better bet and will always have greater demand but the perceived value of Favorit and Felicia doesn’t seem to reflect the current demand, and consequently the need for parts. For the record, the Escort sold within a couple of weeks and the Skoda was still for sale in early July which perhaps says it all.

No. While early fabias used a 1.4 Skoda engine and gearbox derived from the one in Favorit/Felicia, so many changes were done that the Favorit drivetrain wouldn't fit without heavy modifications.

Thanks folks for your replies  -  not what I wanted to hear, but just what I needed to know.

This provokes a new train of thought.    I had presumed that the ongoing popularity of the Fun with enthusiasts was down to sportier performance from the bigger engines fit  - but now I see that the 1.6 MPI was only rated at 5 kw more than the 50 kW later-Favorit 1298 (136 code) engines, and the 1.9 D actually a bit less at 47 kW.

Earlier this year I was astonished by the outrageous prices being demanded by the scrappies for now-rare engines and so I am wondering whether, if someone has invested many many hours and ££££ lovingly restoring a Fun only to be so unlucky then to be landed with a severely perknackered original engine, the 1298 power train might be a highly acceptable and economical substitute.

Sooo, the question now becomes:

- will the 1298 power train (with electronics) fit nicely into a Fun (without serious modifications) ?

Are the engines really that rare? AEF was used in the 6N Polo, AEE and its derivatives in MK3 Golf, 6K Ibiza/Cordoba/Inca/Caddy and 6N Polo..

The engine would fit mechanically, gearbox has different mount - it can be swapped from pre-1999 Felicia. But all funs were MPI and SPI engines are not compatible with the system due to lack of the knock sensor mount.

Am from UK and am picking up AEF engine for a few hundred quid this weekend, the fella has a 1.6, I'll be going from Wales to Norfolk if you're on my way I maybe I'll be able to grab it for you?
