MG Maestro Turbo

Featured Replies

Are there any owners or past owners on here? Just wondering what they are like?

Simply put quite scary.

Fast in a straight line but not so hot in the corners (as standard anyway).

Not many about now.

The same could be said for the Uno turbos as well, Ross?

Yeah, last about as long aswell..lol

They are another of my favourite cars, i would get one but not good at maintaining old motors. Brakes are ment to be sh*te. But perfomance is still good for a 15+ year old motor. Reliability engine wise are fantastic, go on forever 200k plus!!!!

GET ONE IN GREEN!!!!

Theres a green one on ebay for £500, needs work doing through.

Apparently from what I read there are less than 100 now registered.

Most needing alot of work, rust being a major pain as body panels are no longer available, especially the bodykit.

haha the meastro!!! everything falls apart around the engine - that just goes on and on and on and on and on! go to open the door the handle falls off my parents had the posh one which talked to you telling us the fuel was low etc... i remember picking the roof lining off lol was a funny car:)

There used to be an unmarked maestro turbo cop car floating about belfast. I saw it in action one day. Guy in Escort RS Turbo floored at at lights in city centre. Then from nowhere wheels screaming, exhaust roaring maestro took off after it. He reeled in the RS no probs much to the surprise of the RS driver.

The only thing that gave it away was the fat tyres and cop privacy glass. Otherwise it looked like a standard Maestro c/w beige paint job and rust.

I was chatting to a traffic cop at one stage after that and he told me it was chipped to over 200bhp with uprated everything.

I took a lift in Fiat turbo ie (i think it was) in beautiful turquiose green with go faster stripes (those were the days)... would have felt safer in the back of a scaffolding van........ended up with the driver going straight over a country crossroads in convoy on the way to a footy match - Very scary....glad to never go in another one, but seemed to hold the road like a dream - a nutty car...glad to be alive after the experience.

Oh yeah, Maestro, Sometimes go up to Gaydon where you can research the wonders of British Leyland/Austin etc - The maestro was a surprisingly fast car (im surprised you managed to find an example) Had dealings with one in 1988 complete with a little voice that told me to put my seatbelt on and top up fuel. A great crap car!

:):):)

If you go round corners in it the front hubs and bearings will wear out quicker than your pants need changing. Rust. Remember you cant weld to weetabix.

Well fast in a straight line, the O series turbo implementation was old fashioned but effective. Dont crash it. More occupant protection driving a fag packet. All electricals form The Prince of Darkness (or Lucas as they are also known) so swithces, wiring and anything else that is supposed to have electricity flowing through it will be marginal when new and not so god now. Oh and do the pressurised SUs p1ss petrol everywhere at the slightest sign of a fleck of dirt in the fuel line? You betcha life they do.

Never owned one, but have known two who have. I had a Metro turbo for 3 months, which was worse. Much Much worse.

Chris

Arent the Maestros EFI turbos though? And the Montegos had the SU turbo.

I had a Y plate Metro Turbo, until the rear subframe fell out. ;)

I don't know about that but IIRC the maestro was quicker than the Montego. In fact up until a couple of years ago I think the Maestro Turbo was still the quickest Rover group production car ever made.

wasn't it about 6.9 to 60 ? (the meastro) but apparantly the brakes didn't work!

The Maestro was advertised as

"faster than a Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus, etc." in the press adverts of the 80s. n the days before Unleaded fuel, catalysts and occupant safety , there were some fierce cars out there!

Lummox- I assumed you were male. Are you a bloke who does a good impression of a pregnant woman or is that your wife on th photo?

The efi was normally aspired. The rover 220 turbo uses the same engine I believe but has a 16v head. The 220 gsi turbos seem to be very rare too.

had a G reg Maestro MG, but it wasn't a turbo. It wasnt a bad car, for the money. I think I paid 1500 for it (87k one owner). Never had any major problems with it, only time it conked out was after driving through a 2ft flood outside Exeter Airport...doh!

That is indeed the missus (not married yet though thats in October). Our baby is due in august, 8 weeks today to be exact.

There used to be a maestro turbo ran at ten of the best by a guy called andy nicholls of an racing that was always the front wheel drive class winner and it always did late 11 early 12 second quarter mile drag races but i think he changed to an mg zr now which is still a quick car but i don't think it won the front wheel drive class last year, think the maestro is still run but by somebdy else now, think theres some videos of his car on the ten of the best site if your interested:thumbup:
