Jump Start Needs TDI

Featured Replies

Hi All;

I discovered after only owning a diesel for around 8 years, that the jump starting needs of a diesel are much higher than a petrol engine.  Since none of my neighbors, nor many small organizations that jumps start cars have this ability, I wanted to know for a 2 liter TDI what battery capacity I would need for a portable booster system?  All I know is the car uses a 60Ah battery from what I recall.

Cheers,

B

Most booster packs state up to what petrol/diesel engine size they are suitable for.

The one I have will supposedly jump start a diesel up to 4.0 litres.

Spot the contradiction:

"Battery capacity 400 Amp Hours"

"It's easily rechargeable from any powered USB port in 3-hours at 2.1-amps" 🙄

I have some Bosch compatible 18 volt batteries, some from Ali-Express some from Amazon, all Chinese, the Ali-Express ones claim to be 18 ampere hour, an impossibility, and the Amazon ones to be 5 ampere hour, I also have some genuine Bosch 5 ampere hour ones, all of them I have stripped out to check.

All have two sets of five 18650 cells in parallel so the rated capacity of the pack at 18 volts is twice the rated capacity of the cells, the genuine Bosch uses 2500mah cells so is a genuine 5 ampere hour battery pack, the other two use 1500mah cells so are 3 ampere hour packs on a good day, for the price I paid and their run time on high power tools they are acceptable but the claimed capacity of them are fantasy and that goes for the jump start packs as well.

400 amp hours mon cul!!!!!

To be fair, if it's only being used to jump start, I guess the only concern is will it or won't it..... and this one did just fine for me.

For info, I used this a couple times and amazon had an offer on the next model up (GB40), which is actually rated for diesels, at the same price I paid for this base model, so I returned for free and traded up.

I have one of them, no clue which model though. I do know it jumped my old Signum a few times though so I assume it's the 40 or 50 model. I'll have a look tomorrow.

Edit: it's the 40 model. Seems it is only rated to 3.0L diesel.
