I'm assuming I need to take the complete inside of the tailgate apart to replace it, and that this would be a prudent time to add the backup camera if that was in the planning. Anything else I should watch for? My belief is that some water from the wash nozzle got inside the plastic and then it froze, cracking it.

Is this an estate or hatchback as the replacement process is a bit different.

 

hatchback is a lot easier as it just unscrews whereas estate has some funny clips and a gasket that needs replacing.

 

my guess as you mention the washer is that it is an estate.

 

regerding a reverse camera - accessing the inside of the tailgate is only like 10% of fitting the camera so it’s up to you if you wanted to go ahead with something like that at the same time

The camera is something i'd like to do. I figure it makes sense to do while the tailgate is apart, especially if it's funny clips. I will have to ask someone about this.
