The truth

Featured Replies

According to a bloke down the pub:

Apparently all the Tdi and Tdi Pd engines for VAG in are made in the same plant-in Czechland . I heard they run each engine for a period and test the bhp and smoothness of the engines(obviously there will be slight descrepencies between engines.)

Apparently allegedly, Audi get the very top runners / Vw's the next and Skoda/Seats get to fight for the rest (lower powered standard units)

I say this as my Octy Tdi sounds like a bag of spanners when it starts up and yet my mates A3 sounds like a bag of slightly quieter spanners.

Someone somewhere knows the truth or should I refer it to Mouldy and Sculler?:cool:

What youv'e just described is exactly how processors for computers are tested, But I'm not sure that applies to engines too :D. I would have thought that with modern technology there would be less chance of getting a few duffers in every batch, But I could be wrong.....About everything;)

It was just the bloke down the pub who told me, god knows if it's true! The bloke in the chequered shirt with the pint of John Smiths who normally discusses test match cricket and draught excluder.

Anyone else know the troof?

I doubt skoda/seat get the duffers, infact bearing in mind seat got the 1.9 PD engine breating 160BHP I'd say that it wasn't true.

The engines are probably all made at the same place, but I really doubt they brand select as most of the noise you hear is down to how well the engine is insulated, hence the A3 being a slightly quiter bag of spanners.

Don't suppose that bloke has paid for a VW has he as it sounds like he is trying to justify paying the extra for a car with less equipment.

Alot of these stories are made up to suit the person telling it, if he had a Skoda it would all be the other way round like the commonly used phase "It's a VW underneath". You don't hear a golf owner say "it's the same as a Skoda Octavia underneath".

File it under "humourous and entertaining".

Or on the other hand, he might be telling the truth, after all we weren't allowed fluid damped grab handles were we???:P

Nope , no truth in that at all.

For a start there are some physical differences between the various PD130 engines fitted to the different cars which would prevent that from being done.

As for why some cars sound a bit quieter than others.... It's safe to say that the premium brands do get a bit more soundproofing than us "lesser" people

I always assumed the VW engines were manufactured at the Wolfsburg Plant. Probably wrong though

I'd contest that.....I drive a VW PD unit, and it sounds worse than a rusty old 2.5D transit van.....always has, even from the dealer forecourt. I'm sure someone stripped out the soundproofing in the interests of weight-saving (she's a heay old tank too)

Did you know?

The various engines and features available in the Golf can conceivably be put together in some three million different combinations.

Surely as can lego?

I think that is rubbish.. I work for a well known engine manufacturer and our different engines are all based on a common platform and the rest is what the customer asks for on the engine and its specific application. All of our engines go through something called hot test where the engine is ran at rated speed and power for 2 minutes and the data is analyzed for some basic parameters. If the engine is +- 5% on power or torque it is sent back if it passes then off it trots to the customer.

If you was getting that much variability between engines that you can choose between them and give the better ones to audi then i think they need to seriously re consider their design and manufacturing system because something is going drastically wrong somewhere! hence the reason i think its utter b/s

I don't think that the theory holds up. My dad drives a 55 plate golf TDI and it's noiser than his old golf with the same spec engine!

I also don't think VAG would consider picking specific engines based on the noise they produce for specific brands to be a good use of time or resources. Especially now there on a cost cutting mission.

If the engine is +- 5% on power or torque it is sent back if it passes then off it trots to the customer.

So what you're saying is it's extremely unlikely in such an advanced manufacturing plant that an engine leaves the production line that has well in excess of the stated manufacturer's figures, eg a PD130 engine producing more than 136.5 bhp ;)

Chris

Well thats how 'we' operate.. maybe VW is different.

We test our engines straight off the production line, so dont forget that as the engine beds in and loosens up a bit the power will increase.
