Engine re-starting when using stop_start system.

Featured Replies

So I've been using the stop/start system quiet a bit more than I planned to.  Now I've noticed that for the past few days the car acting somewhat bizzare as I've observed that the engine doesn't always restart if I remove my foot off the brake pedal,  rather I have to actually press the accelerator for the engine to start before i can drive off. My understanding has always been that when you remove your foot from the brake, automatically that starts the engine so you can drive off, but for the part 3 to 4 days there are times where that doesn't occur and I need to press the gas pedal.  Is this normal, have others also experienced this. Or is it an indication something isn't right.

That doesn't fit with how I expect the start / stop to behave.  For the engine to stop I need to be stationery, in neutral with the clutch up.  As soon as I depress the clutch the engine fires up.  The brake and accelerator don't come into it.

Oh that's different i don't know how it works with manual. This is a dual clutch automatic so I wonder if that applies here too in terms of the clutch system. Anyway like I said though normally just lifting the foot off the brake pedal even slightly restarts the engine. Yes of course the car is stationary stopped

Do you have Auto Hold enabled? The car won’t start until you press the accelerator.

I believe I do,  yes, it could be that,  thanks.  But I would think it's always on, and it's not like it only happens only when the car is on the incline, I will have to check to see.

"Auto Hold" doesn't only operate when the car is on an incline.

Ok i didn't know that.  I thought it was only to prevent the car rolling back, so it only engaged those times.  But my question  then why  is it only occurred more recently and not all the time.

Do you have Auto Hold switched on? Is the button illuminated orange?

Things getting mixed up on here.

DSG and if you have 'Autohold' on and you stop you can take your foot off the brake pedal and the brakes hold the car until you want to move. press the accelerator.

Stop / Start also enabled, the engine can stop.  With Auto hold on just touch the accelerator to restart engine, or the brake, or move the steering wheel.

The Parking / e-Brake is not used to hold in 'Autohold'   In Autohold the brake lights are on.

If you want Stop / Start off turn it off.

I am sure this is in another thread the OP started.

Ok now I get it, thanks for explaining it. I must have somehow accidentally engaged the Autohold. Yes I do want the stop start on and know how to turn it off but for the Autohold I was not too sure but now it's more clear on how to do so and also how it works. I think I'm good now.

Sorry but it is always good to RTOM.

There are times that with Stop / Start enabled the engine will fire up, that is in the manual as well.

Autohold is not Hill Hold Assist, that was a thing and still is for some cars.

What does that stand for exactly.

Yes I was confusing autohold hill hold assist because I thought as a dsg car it would require it.  It's clear now that it's not the same.  I have hired a car many years back that had hill hold assist.  Thanks for clearing it up

RTOM = Read the owners manual.
