Fuel leak in engine bay

Featured Replies

2.0 TSI 206kw. 2016. 150,000kms.

Greetings all.

After driving for 15 minutes this morning, out of the blue I got a strong whiff of petrol in the cabin. I stopped and after a bit of googling I found a few articles that mentioned the rubber shroud around the fuel filler cap interfering with the seating of the cap. Having recently filled up, I checked this and lo and behold the shroud was indeed sitting proud and was possibly causing the cap not to seal properly.

So, a few seconds to fix this and I thought things were all good, however, on starting the engine the smell was there again. I wasn’t far from home so risked it and drove home to have a better look.

On opening the bonnet there was an overwhelming smell of petrol, most noticeable behind/below the intake manifold by the fuel rail. Using a torch with the engine running I thought I noticed liquid spraying out and on inspection with a borescope I could definitely see fuel spraying around the area (see attached video). So of course it’s New Years and nothing is open until Wednesday but I’m thinking this looks like an injector seal failure? The rubber seal between the injector and the fuel rail perhaps.

Has anyone seen this sort of thing before? Any recommendations for steps I can take to identify further?

Thanks all!
