Time for my first Skoda

Recommended Posts

Hello !

Having owned a lot of different types of cars over the years it's time to get something with a large back end that I can get animal feeds in, DIY gear to service my rental at the other end of the country and my eMTB (plus the ever-growing barrage of grand children).

Initially I was after an Octavia Scout but there seem to be none near me, or in my price range (dont want to spend more than £5k).

I want 4WD and a bit of ruggedness as we live in the country and as I get older we will want to move to somewhere even more remote (pretty much done with the great unwashed and the government currently TBH).

With my lack or progress my mind strayed back to JDM days and I found myself looking at Subaruy Legacies (3.0R and 2.0 GT tt) with the idea of LPG'ing them. Very capabale motors, but getting old now. Brain needed to triumph over heart!

Attached though, is my rather detailed assessment of 2 possibilities, one which I saw today, one which I am seeing tomorrow morning. I think heart and brain can happily be in the same place here (as long as I can get over the fact that both cars have north of 140k miles on them).

I'll report back how I get on, but I expect within the next few days to be the proud owner of a Superb 2.0TDI CR 170 4x4 Estate Elegance 🙂

Happy to be steered if in my assessment I have made any glaring errors.

Look forward to getting to know you all. For background sake, I also have a Twingo RS133 with a 200bhp Clio engine (was fun at the Ring and in the Alps this year), a Smart Roadster I'm looking to add a bike engine to, and a 1986 Porsche 924S which has been a stationary work in progress for a least two years. Ooh, and if I sell a house I have up North I'll try to add an X150 4.2V8 supercharged XKR to that lost later this year.

As long as the MOT history is clean and the service record is comprehensive, a high-mileage motor can be a good option.

I’ll be interested to hear how you get on.

I pick the 2011 4x4 up on Friday. Last few years have seen 51k put on the clock, so Ive got the garage to do the cambelt, water pump and tensioners, haldex oil and pump filter and an engine oil change before I pick her up. There will undoubtedly be a few things that need fixing, optical parking system was unavailable as an example. Gearbox is a bit notchy so I might change the box oil and filter, but surprised to hear the clutch is covered under the 12 month warranty.
