Buy a car without a test drive...?

Featured Replies

Current - 03 Octy vRS Hatch

Potential - 06 Octy vRS Estate

Time limited offer (before end of quarter), demonstrator not available until after cut-off.

Going from what I read I should not be disappointed but stil...

Is there not a demo car at another dealer?

Question is do you trust what you read agrees with your own views? :D As Eddy said, I'd hunt out a car at another dealer to test drive....

Always test drive a car before buying it - there coul dbe somethingyou really hate about it that you'd not otherwise know.

Example; the MKIV Golf is a fine car but the dash is black as a night sky and I felt like I was looking through a letterbox - so I diddnt buy it.

having moved from 1 to the other...its familiar..but better in every way

I probably could have bought one without the test drive..but I am glad I did test drive one because it made the anticipation of finally getting it all the better :)

Love swmbo car, but the dealer did say he had a chap buy one only to bring it back a few weeks later to try and get his old mk1 back - the problem - said he found it painfull to drive due to a previous knee/leg operation and the fact that the accellerator is now 'the american type' ie hinged on the floor. The dealer mentioned it cos I was still using crutches at the time we first looked, I however found the car no problem, but it goes to show a good test drive is a must.

Contact Skoda, they are usualy helpful in contacting dealers to find you a demo car, they were incredibly helpful when we wanted to see a Superb in a specific colour/trim combination before we ordered

Well, I needed to drive today (lunchtime) as I had to commit for the financial quarter cutoff and this dealer is the only one reachable. Did a second best and took out a 2.0 FSI instead. I'm sure the performance is not going to be an issue, I just needed to drive an Octy 2 to make sure there were no showstoppers. The new one felt massive behind the wheel in the showroom (not good) but was fine outdoors. Size wise felt much the same as the current one, which is to be expected.

Verdict...

Non-plussed because...

The floor-hinged gas was strange (will get used to it).

The ride seemed no more supple than my current vRS - maybe a little more "jiggly" (higher profile tyres the culprit)?

Disappointing road noise level - thought it might be improved over the old model - especially as I'm comparing against a sportified version.

But overall I preferred it because...

In cornering the thing felt much more composed than the current car - less roll, more agile.

The interior ambience is a notch higher.

I'm thinking if a "normal" 2.0 non-sports version appears to handle better than my Mk 1 vRS, the mk 2 vRS must be *special*

So I bought one!

Black, Jumbo Box, 18s, and Skoda Dealer fit rear sensors (and the proper green calipers - aux input be damned!) Should be in my grubby hands before the weekend.

More debt. Yay!

You are pretty spot on with what you say, the floor hinged accelerator is odd at first but you get used to it in a few hundred miles.

Everything has that familiar Skoda feel to it but everything is improved.

I have the sports suspension and the 17" alloys, the ride is a little firm and somewhat "jiggly" but again, you get used to it very quickly and the excellent seats soak most of it up.

The road noise is very dependant on the tyres, my 225 contis are quieter than the 205 Bridgestones.

Oh and congratulations on your purchase! :D

Churs - and ta for input in roofbars thread :)

tyre noise is definitely more in the new one but I put theat down to the bigger wheels/tyres...and certain bloody road surfaces....the flippin concrete bit on the a19 does my head in! then you move onto lovely nice smooth road after it and its almost silent!
