To XL or not to XL

Featured Replies

Hi all

Having recently hit a couple of (hidden) pot holes I now need 2 new tyres. All 4 are currently XL tyres and was thinking of replacing all 4 with non XL tyres to soften the ride.

Does anyone know if XLs were fitted as standard at the factory and is it ok to run non XL tyres?

car is a 2011 1.8 tsi estate.

thanks

No and don't know since you've omitted all information about the tyres except that they're "eXtreme Load" version.

Hi @Paws4Thot, thanks for the question.

the current tyres are Ventus v 12 evo XL

225/45 17

…. but what I’m trying to find out is whether it’s ok in general to  buy non XL tyres for the 2011 1.8 tsi estate.

thanks.

Extra Load not Extreme Load.

?

Why would you not fit tyres with the correct speed and load rating and reinforced sidewalls.   The rid will not be harsher and if a few quid difference they are worth it.

The information you seek is here

Edit: 94 load rating is XL

have a read to confirm

7.5J x 17” 225/45 R17 94 W/Y

You're still omitting the load index and speed rating , which are pretty vital here. As a generalisation you can not fit a lower load index than factory ( @xman indicates 94 was standard).

Ok a correction to my previous post, 94 load rating in that size is XL rated. So factory fit tyres were XL rated.

Thanks for the info on this .... amazing what you learn.

So I thought there were 2 versions of a tyre available - e.g. ....

225/45 94Y

or

224/45 94Y XL

but I think from the discussion that all 225/45 94Y are XLs
