4FA, V71, air not icy, recirc flap not moving

Featured Replies

I’m in need of some help.

im getting fault code 01274 (4FA) on my mk1 Octavia with climatronic.

also, air con was regassed, hardly any refrigerant added, no leaks found, and with Climatronic in AUTO, I can see the AC compressor running under the bonnet.

so the main bits of the AC seem to be operational.

does the faulty v71 recirc flap have an effect on air icy-ness? Really scratching my head here!

You think that you can see it running but have a feel around with the engine stopped, has the shear plate let go?

The best way to check is to remove the lower side undershield and see if the centre nut on the shaft is turning.

Shear plate is number 2 possibility, number 1 is the modulating valve.

A low tech way to see if it is cooling is to put on minimum temp high fan speed and run the engine, if the high speed cooling fans do not cut in within 20 seconds it will not be cooling, they also can be responsable for the pump not being commanded.

You could also feel the inlet and outlet pipes for temperature but no point if the fans are not running.

Apologies, my reply ignored your fault code which does point to the mixing flap, you could do the last 2 tests just to be certain that is the only issue.

Flapaerobics might get it moving again.

Ah great thanks for the guidance. I’ll try your low tech test this morning. By high speed fans I’m assuming we’re talking about the 2 large radiator fans at the front bumper?

Yes.

Well one of them ISTR the RH one. The other is the low speed fan, which should start when ever you turn the AC on (or put Climatronic in Auto or Defrost (in Auto, press button with illustration like HRW on AC control panel, which should switch heat to full, interior fan to full and direct air flow to open fascia vents)).

Actually, speaking of fascia vents you get best results by leaving all 4 cheesegraters open, and Climate on Auto at preferred temperature and outside air rather than recirculate all the time.

Ok so I turn AC on and both large diameter fans spin up.

With AC on lowest, I’m feeling around the pipes in the engine bay and none seem to be getting cold.

any pipes I should be checking in particular?
