Rattle from gear stick

Featured Replies

Could any one help me i have a metalic rattle from the underside of my felcia 13 lxi but when you move the gear lever it goes off. Many thanks.:D

it might be the steady bar on the linkage a little bit loose. the gear linkage on the felicia has two rods. 1: is the selector rod which selects the gears. 2: the steady bar links the gear lever housing to the gearbox casing, the way it works is that when the weight of the engine/gearbox moves under accelaration or braking the steady bar forces the gear lever to move the same amount as the engine.

and if it is loose they rattle!!

do you find it a little difficult to select certain gears

Thanks for the reply. Gear selection is ok i will try that bar see if it is loose.

At the very rear of the linkage it sits in a rubber bush, the bush wears with time, the answer is to wrap some tape around the end of the linkage.

or replace the bush as it's only a chaep part ;)

one thing to try- mine rattled, and i spoke to the guys down at iml (my local main dealer)

They suggested that i turn the rubber bush upside down (so it clamps the steady bat tighter). after trying this the gear change feels much smoother and it does not rattle. the lever is still allowed movement with the engine this way, it just provides far more damping.

However, only try this if the rubber bush you still have is not cracked or worn, or it will wear out VERY quickly. If its in good condition, coat it with rubber grease!

  • 2 weeks later...

had the same problem on my Felicia 1.9 D. I fixed this problem this week and now the gears changes like new. The problem was the 2 bars that forms a double cardan at the end of the rod. They had a lot of play. I cut them out and replace them with 2 others that I made myself. They were very worn. My car has 100.000 KM , I can imagine why they were so worn out. The double cardan joint continues with a shaft about 2 inches long that goes into Gearbox. The rattle is gone now and the gear change improved drasticaly. The lower end of the shift stick goes into a little box that is welded to the rod. The shift stick stays in this box suported by 2 rubber holders. I also filled that little box with greese to make is move smooth. When you try to shift a gear the movement is transmitted by shift stick to the little box (and of course to the rod) and the rod moves the double cardan joint which will move the shaft that goes into gearbox , and the gear change is performed. If you need more info I can provide you with that, even pictures.

I would be interested in seeing these pictures.

Many thanks.

Do I need to upload the picture first on other host and make the link only here? I don't know how it works uploading pictures here...

I'm not sure how this works either - looks like you may have to link to a host. Not to worry...it's just I had a similar problem and was interested to see your solution.

Here is the solution I used for the rattle coming from worn linkage (double cardan) .

Here are the 2 original shafts , very worn as you can see. They were to blame for the rattle. I made 2 other by myself (check the upper picture), I made the thread and I used nuts and at the end of them I drilled a hole where I inserted a safety pin. I hope it will hold another 100.000 km :-) I hope this help somebody...
