Drivers Door Open Not Showing In Maxidot

Featured Replies

I first notice last week that when the drivers door is opened it was not showing on the maxidot the outline of the car with the door opened. I assumed it was just a glitch as it went away soon after.

Tonight, I decided to take my family to the local church for 5 minutes and when I returned it again happened that all the other doors are shown as opened except the drivers door.

Any ideas what could be the cause? I'm hoping WD40 in the right place would be the fix.

Thanks,

Kev.

There are two common causes.

1) there is a wire break in the rubber tube between the body and the door (the "hose" you see when you open the door).

2) there is failure of the door open sensor (microswitch?) or a fault in the door control module in the door.

Warning: if only the driver's door is opened and then closed and the door open icon has not displayed, the car will self lock after about a two minutes with you inside. Make sure you have the key with you as you will have to turn the ignition on to make the doors unlock. Ask me how I know!

Where is the door open sensor (microswitch?) . I can't find one.

In the Mk1 it was in the door lock mechanism inside the door and probably the same on the Mk2

I worked how to trigger the door open/closed sensor with door open. WD40 has seemed to have fixed the issue for now.

The wiring appears to be good. No damage to the rubber cover and I can't feel any damage to the cable.

What I did notice when opening the rear doors there was a one second delay before the maxidot registered a change. I have WD40 all doors now and the change in the maxidot is now instant, as if the sensor was sticking.

If it occurs again I will report back.

For the benefit of future readers, where exactly did you squirt the WD40, internally through a hole? just on the visible mechanism? or somewhere else?

For the benefit of future readers, it ain't worked. The problem is back again today but it's failed completely now.

I am convinced myself that it is the microswitch/sensor. The wiring is in just too good a condition to be at fault and it's a low milage car as well. I intend to strip the door and have a look. I need to youtube to see what to expect first.

I will update as I progress for all my readership.

Hi! Did you manage to find the issue yet?

Funny enough, I was just thinking about this.

No, not yet. It has not happened again at all over the winter but has happened again now it's got warm. I notice because I have set the electric seat to retract when the door is opened and the seat doesn't retract if it can't sense the door is opened.

It's the microswitch in the door I'm certain but to access the microswitch the door card needs to be removed and the inner panel that is riveted to the door needs to be removed. It's a major job to do.

I will sort it eventually but it may be a while.

Have you had a chance to scan the car to check if there is any error related to the door?

I am also looking forward to replace that module but I have other things to address to before, as mine is a crash damaged VRS that I want to bring back to life.

Was curious if you just sorted this out. Thanks!

My door open icon does not work when the door is in summer sun. Starts working again when the car is moving - door cools down. Lately has started to not work on very cold days.

I have had it confirmed by a VAG garage and an auto electrician that the cause is the microswitch inside the door lock.

Cost of new lock is ~£300 and similar cost for labour. The labour is high because the entire window system has to be removed (and later replaced) to gain access to the lock.

The auto electrician says that he does this regularly, particularly on Audi variants.
