DPF questions - Octavia Scout 2016

Featured Replies

I've read the main thread, but mostly I just see worries from new owners, and my car is 8 years old, so...

I've also posted some questions there but the thread seems dead, as in just as an information thread.

The link above is something I repeatedly see in this an other forums, yet the link is dead. Where can I find that pdf so I can read up on the topic myself, instead of just asking questions?

I have yet to see anyone explain how you notice if a regen is happening while you are driving, other than some mention a smell. Well, I cannot really say I've noticed any strong smells, but I also live out in the countryside, where farmers obviously do things that can smell a little from time to time.

There's also no indications in the display(s) nor do I notice any other things, so how can I know a regen is actually going on so I can try to drive till it is finished?

Manual says if the warning light comes on you must drive between 1800-2500rpm in 4-5th gear and above 70kmph for at least 15 minutes or till the light goes out. It does not say anything about what happens if you get above or below the rpm range for a brief moment, so it would be good to know if you 100% need to be within the range for the entire duration, because that means you cannot do this just about anywhere because you obviously need to stop if you need to stop for something blocking the road or what ever else.

As I have the automatic DSG gearbox I also wonder if I can select "manual" gearing so I have full control of the rpms as when in automatic it so often want to put in next gear and get below 1500rpm which would be an annoyance during an exercise like this.

I've only had the warning light come on twice for as long as I've owned it, so I just want to know what is actually correct approach. That pdf file would've been nice though...

When driving you can notice a Regen as the throttle response is a bit less sharp. Also revs will sit at 1000 if a Regen is running. So at junctions you might notice the revs don’t drop.

As T07 has said ,if its doing a regen the RPM @ idle is higher than normal. Another indication that a regen is required with a DSG box car is the reluctance to change up a gear, you may find that for Example DSG is selecting 3rd rather than the usual 4th .

As for smell , if you interrupt a regen you will find the radiator fan running @ full speed when you wouldn't expect it & a smell of burning rubber, the smell in  time becomes ever less noticeable .

As for having the warning light come on ,once, just once I've had that happen. On the way to having a MOT in the early days of covid lockdown .this with  approx. 8 years of having DPF fitted diesels .

To be sure, when idling stop the A C running , that might keep your revs to 1k , also if your battery needs charging while starting your engine it might keep it to 1k as well for a few minutes. In my case the sound of the engine idiling is diffrent while regenerating comparing to the other cases mentioned above

Throttle response different, engine sound gruff, high idle speed, gear change indicator telling driver to select a lower gear under certain conditions when it would normally not do so (driving at 50kph in 5th or 6th gear) or the DSG doing so unbidden, radiator fan running at shutdown is the most obvious sign but that is of an interrupted regen.
