Diesel rattle - cetane number

Featured Replies

Recently purchased a 2017 octavia 2.0 TDI and noticed a harsh engine rattle under light load. From reading online I suspected that this is pre-ignition rattle and might be remedied by using higher cetane fuel. I'm in the UK and put a tank of BP Ultimate diesel (guaranteed cetane number >55) in instead of my usual Tesco fuel. Low and behold, the rattle is all but gone. Anyone know if there's another fix for this rather than using expensive fuel as this negates the economy of a diesel. I've read that it's possible to have the injection timing recalibrated but can't find much on the topic. Anyone knowledge about this?

Just go for a test drive in a Ford Diesel and yours will sound like a Rolls Royce in comparison and you will feel much better

What is the mileage on your car?

Depending on when this was last done, maybe change the oil?
