Glow plug flashing warning light, sudden loss of power while driving

Whilst driving back from Birmingham on Sat, the glow plug warning light flashed, car misfired and idled erratically and we managed to limp to a laybay for recovery.  After getting home, OBDeleven showed following error codes:

 

P020400 Cylinder 4 injector circuit static 

P060600 ECM/PCM processor Intermittent

 

I also have P067 Cylinder 1 Glow Plug circuit Intermittent, although that has been there for a few weeks and I'm guessing it could be a faulty or worn glow plug?

 

I wonder if you peeps can help me please.  I'm thinking of buying new glow plugs anyway as I've had the car over 2 years second-hand so no idea if they have been changed, previously.

 

I'm prepared for a worst case scenario of a possible new injector, although I only use decent diesel and its has annual carbon clean.  Are the above codes more likely electrical connectors or relay fault or an actual fault with a glow plug and injector?

 

Car is Octavia Greenline 1.6tdi  63k

As far as I'm aware, the glow plugs are only heating on a start up, especially on cold start - they should not affect engine operation once it is running, I think you should be looking at the injector fault for your breakdown.

Many thanks Warrior193.  Fingers crossed it's not going to be an actual injector replacement (but I'm prepared for it just in case!) 

When this breakdown happened, did the 'check engine' (MIL) indicator light up also?

No, only the orange glow plug light at first, but it came on after unloading from the recovery vehicle afterwards 

From the limited information I have found for the P0400 (injector4) fault, it appears faulty wiring (ground return) can be possible cause - perhaps possible the ECM fault is also connected.

It appears that the injectors are fed a live 12V supply, with the trigger going to ground to operate it.

Ah ok, many thanks, I'll have a look tomorrow as I'm away after that with work until Sat. Having not experienced this before, where should I be looking to begin with in terms of earth points?  Is the ECM under the windscreen scuttle part?

The 1.6 L engine is prone to injector failure beyond 75,000 miles/10+ years. Furthermore, once one fails, the others fail soon after. 

You say a greenline model so it is just my guess that yours is a 1.6 l.

You can find the engine code in the boot on a sticker near the place for a spare wheel. For example mine is CAYC and yours will have similar format.

Yeah mine's a 1.6 CAYC, oh well, if it is injector failure, I've seen reconditioned ones, which are cheaper, but would it be worth it, if I intend to keep the car a good few more years?

Thats the situation I was in.

When the garage went to change the first injector they also looked at the other three and found one of them was aslo well out of spec. So injectors two and three were changed.

Knowing from posts on here that the others were likely to fail, I had injectors one and four changed by an independant VAG specialist at about half the material cost and lower labour rate.

It may be a 12 year old car but I see it as keeper.

 

I have no experience of reconditioned injectors but based on (maybe biased) heresay I decided to bite the cost bullet.

Probably best to get genuine new ones and bite the bullet lol at least they'll be good for a few years. Ive noticed a green mark on injector 3, as if its been replaced with a second hand one maybe? Yeah, this one's defo a keeper, low mileage and vgc.  Were they VDO /Siemens that they used or Bosch injectors when garage replaced them?

 

I'm also thinking of changing glow plugs (not because of the injector fault code, but being over 10 years and no idea if they have been done previously, will give peace of mind on fuel and starting)

Update on the above, fitted 4 reconditioned injectors, and new return lines and coded the injectors. Everything working fine but one injector doesn't have a good fit with the return line, it's too loose and almost popping out (I can move it without too much effort with engine off. Any ideas, could it be poor injector? Or is there a way of holding it in better. I've fitted new clamp springs and still the same.
