Central console phone box lightning

Hello,

   Does anyone knows how the central console phone box lightning (see picture) should work? Closing/opening the lid/cover does nothing. The issue is, in my case, that sometimes, when the lights are on, the phone box is illuminated for about 30s after I start the car (or open/close the door), other times it remains on until I turn off the car.
