Fabia- Is it a dust cap,or what?

Featured Replies

Hi,

FABIA Hatch 1.9 sdi.year 2000

I took off the nearside front wheel ,and found a pressed steel round disc floating loose inside. Its about 42 mm diameter with a hexigon female inset. The centre was threaded ,and looked as it had been overtightened ,at some time ,as part of the thread was left on threaded stub of the axle. (not by me). Can somebody advise me of its purpose ,is it a dust cap,or a lock nut ? Is it available at most Skoda parts dept, or will it be special order ?,

thanks

Whats the part number on it? might help. :)

I'm wondering if its bit of a hub nut? Hope not.

Is it a countersunk head screw? If so this is what holds the disc to the hub before the wheel is bolted on.

Mustve rattled out :)

actually, re-reading that , dont think it can be! 42mm dia much too big!

Not too big for a hub nut thread bit though, which is what's worrying me. Its usually quite important to keep the hub attached to the driveshaft.

Get it checked asap - that's a big part, and as Jason says, kinda would like it to stay on (read: if it doesn't it wouldn't surprise me if it involved some kinda bad thing happening)

Hi thanks for all the advice. It does not have a part number on it. I put wheel off in my first post ,it was only the hub cap I removed. I phoned a Skoda Parts dept, who advised me it was a ' panel nut' ,and costs

42mm diamater panel nut? How does that get inside your wheel trim though?

got any pics of the wayward bit??

It is threaded ,and at sometime it was put on to tight , (I have never touched it ,neither has any garage )which stripped the thread ,freeing the front flange part, leaving a threaded tube with fins on it to trap in the hub housing. After decussing it with a Skoda Parts Dept ,I was told it was a 'Panel nut '. It shields the splined shaft outside end from water etc .

I took broken part to Steve (parts dept} of Express Garage, of Herne Bay ,Kent. who immediately indentified it as a lock nut. The part has been redesigned ,and is now much stronger .I have now had both front wheel nuts now replaced .They are about

do you mean the large nut that screws onto the c.v. joint in the centre of the drive flange ?

Yeah, it kinda holds the driveshaft in the hub, rather important.

Note the torque figures, also very critical.
