Intermittent EPC Light

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, I am writing this in search of some help for this apparently not so serious but annoying problem.

So, a couple of months ago I've received a Skoda Fabia Mk1, 2005, with approx. 250k KMs (6Y, 1.2 64 hp engine). Recently, however, the EPC light on the dashboard seems to light up intermittently. This has happened during city drives, long-distance trips, short-distance trips and on the highway.

Based on what I've read around here, I do not seem to have any acceleration problems, and the brake light functions correctly. I will attach a video below to understand how it works:

The problem is, when I took it to a shop, they've scanned for codes, and there was nothing there, only an older but cleared P0171. Could this be the error? But, as I said, there don't seem to be any acceleration or rough driving problems.

I was thinking whether this could be a connection problem as well (maybe a loose connector somewhere).

Do you have any idea of what this might be and where I should start looking for the problem?

Thank you in advance!

Might be air filter related. I just did my sons clutch and had stuffed a rag into air intake on top of engine just in case anything went down there when I had engine cover off. Forgot to remove it and had same problems. Removed rag and EPC light stopped coming on. The old code of P0171 is I think mixture too lean so also perhaps was fuel filter/fuel system. If theres no new stored codes not sure what else it may be. May have to keep driving until it stays on or stores a code.

Hello Alasdair, thank you for your response!

I've replaced the old engine cover since the two hoses were broken. I've also made sure that nothing is blocking the air.

Also changed the old fuel filter as it wasn't replaced in ages based on the previous owner's feedback.

My concern is that, at times, it looks that this epc light is flickering. On some roads it consistently flickers and does not reach full brightness (if that makes sense). I was thinking whether this could be a shorting wire (which at times might short out). Also, it does not light up immediately, but only after 10-20 mins of driving.

If  the EPC light is dim or flickering it may be similar to the few probems with an octavia 1.9tdi I have DPF light flickered and was slightly dim as well as ABS and also engine managment light. None were bright but almost half bright. Turned out to be a bad dash connection at rear of cluster that was throwing up random warning lights. There were no fault codes stored. I stripped out dash and cleaned the connector to the cluster with electrical cleaner and reconnected and it cured it. I worked out it was electrical as my octavia didn't have a DPF being a bxe engine. Make sure you remove battery before disconnecting as on the octavia you can enable the engine imobilser if you try to remove the dash. Not sure on the fabia but better safe than sorry

Before looking at dash Just remebered that there was a small rubber pipe from under engine/removable cover  on my sons fabia. Its about 10-15mm and goes from the engine cover to I think rocker/manifold. Not sure what its for. May be a crank/rocker breather pipe but might be worth checking its connected and not blocked.
