2018 vrs tdi low mpg in cold Grill covers

Featured Replies

Anyone run a winter grill cover on there tdi ,it's a 2018 mk3 vrs dsg, my mpg drops a lot when its anything under 5 degrees I normally get around 50mpg on the way to work in normal temps when it gets cooler it drops to around 33mpg same distance and trip every day so was wondering if the grill cover would help

I have a Team Heko one on my 2016 Yeti 150 TDI.  I fitted it primarily to help raise the oil temperature more quickly so that I could drive it a bit hard harder earlier.   The car's a 4x4 manual, mapped to c. 185 hp and I'm getting just over 40 mpg in this weather.

Kopacek do a winter grill for the MK3's.  If you have constant low temperatures, it makes sense, although its not recommended if you sit in lots of traffic.

Such masks are common in nordic countries for winter time. You may consider also or alternatively masking the lower "grill" which is even more open to the engine department. Never caused any problems.

In addition, there is possibility that you have some degree thermostat or water pump problem. Basically running all the time on full water circulation (at least partially) when it shud run on the small circulation before the coolant has reached high enough temperature.

@stig1  Just being nosy but how far is that run to work and how many miles do you do before the oil shows at 50*oC and gets to showing 92*oC or there about?
