boot lid - wont open?

Featured Replies

Hi,

When our car is unlocked, we appear to have an issue such that we can't open the boot lid via the external boot release switch just above the number plate?

When pressing this switch, i can't seem to hear the usual actuator noise? So eventually gave up this evening...

Is there a way of manually opening the boot lid? can someone advise?

I also realised later on that there might be another option to open via the keyfob? So assume this option might work and worth a try in the morning?

I assume this might be a common issue, any ideas if this sounds like a faulty boot release switch? or possibly wiring etc?

 thx

There's a hole in the plastic tailgate lining that you push a small screwdriver in.

I ended up replacing the lock and then the microswitch 'handle'. I would start with the microswitch.

Thanks, will take a look.

If switch the dead, i assume using the fob would still work as a temp option ?

Mine was failing but would work if you timed the key fob unlock press perfectly while squeezing the release handle? I replaced the lock/ latch unit first thinking it was that but it was the 'handle'.

This happened to me. I got fed up with crawling into the boot to open it from the inside. Garage finally tracked it down to a broken wire.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

I went out and gave things a try this lunchtime......to my surprise everything worked as normal!? Whilst last night it didnt even budge (no latching noise nothing)?

The external handle/switch worked without issue, as you could hear the latch trigger.

I also tried the keyfob and that worked also. I managed to use the keyfob alone to open the boot without touching the external handle/switch.

Required me to press/hold the fob once to unlock the boot, then a further press/hold whilst opening the boot.

I wonder if its just a sign that the handle/switch is on its way?

I do wonder if the issue may have been related to the rain and moisture has worked it way in causing a temp issue? Random guesses here?

Just have to monitor things.

Yes, probably on its way out. We put up with ours for a few months before giving up.

Yes, sorry to be negative but for a while ours seemed to be OK before finally failing. I've just dug out the invoice from the garage (October 2022). Briefly, the garage reported

  • open circuit to tailgate latch.
  • strip out tailgate
  • test microswitch - OK
  • test tailgate latch - working intermittently, broken wires in top of tailgate.
  • remove loom and repair. (They just added an extra wire to the loom rather than replace the loom)
  • still working intermittently. Retest and tailgate switch faulty. Replaced with new switch.

All has been well since. Labour was £250, the new switch £40 and the final bill with VAT was £360 so for budget purposes you could say now £400-£450? This was at a local independent garage.

No-one likes bills for their car but for the work involved I didn't think this was bad (it was worth a lot not to have to keep climbing over the back seats to release the catch) and overall, at now 11 years old, the Yeti has proved pretty reliable and problem free.

Ach rear boot button seems to given up now after sometime….

It is safe to say that if I can still open the boot via the remote key fob then the issue is the micro switch button (and not any wiring)?
