Engine Support Beam

Featured Replies

Calling @Alasdair1 - one for you.

Was planning on fitting the updated timing chain tensioner this bank holiday weekend having read about the 1.8TSI and 2.0TSI engine failures in the pinned thread here https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/266114-18tsi-and-20tsi-engine-failures/.

Over the winter months I have bought all the tools, consumables and parts I thought I might require. Last on the list was an engine support beam off Ebay. This arrived last week.

My son came over yesterday as he is going to be helping me and wants to learn 'mechanicing' as he calls it. I lifted the bonnet of my car an immediately noticed a problem. I had believed the engine support beam rubber feet would just mount into the rain channels on both sides of the engine bay. This is what the Youtubers do. Except there are no rain channels.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to position the feet for the support beam? I have read in the forum posts that @Alasdair1 has used an engine support beam on his own vehicle so how did you position it? I don't want to damage the wings.

Thanks,

Kev.

Is the beam wide enough to go to the outside of the wings. You may be able to build up something either side of car for it to sit on or perhaps inside the engine bay where the engine/gearbox mounts are.

Thanks for coming back to me on this.

The work ended up getting cancelled anyway, apparently a 19th wedding anniversary is not celebrated with engine oil.

I think the only options are to use the outer wings or use a jack under the sump. The beam is 1.5 meters wide so easily wide enough. As I've now had a detailed look and discovered there is support under the wings.

Yes, I am going to build up something to protect the wings.

First I have some sheep wool padding that came as insulation in a recent package.

There is enough to fold double thickness and have a large pad for each side. I will place these pads on top of the wing first so any grit is not pressed into the paintwork. I'll wipe down the wings before I start anyway. I will use masking tape to hold position.

On top of the sheep wool padding I am going to place a 5mm thick neoprene pad. This is to help spread the load. Bought via Ebay .

To protect the entire wing I will be using a Magnetic Fender Cover again bought via Ebay. These will go over the pads.

It will probably be a few weeks now until I do any work. The tensioner is only being fitted for peace of mind so no urgency. I'll update when I get further.

Don't know why that last image has been inserted. I can't get rid of it, so it will have to stay

Reckon you shoud be ok especially as the weight is being distributed. I would keep the support as close to above the support as possible.
