Superb 280 brake upgrades

Featured Replies

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I'm getting my 280 remapped by revo and I am thinking it's probably best to upgrade the brake due to power increase. I'm looking at the ebc yellowstuff pads but I'm wondering if it's worth going for grooved discs as well. It would only be for road use, any advice is appreciated.

@scree82 Once you increase the acceleration are you going to start driving faster on the roads or taking the car on track?

Is the car going to become heavier than it is now with a remap?

Brake upgrades is a great idea if the brakes are poor performers, as is tyres.

Suspension as well because obviously a Revo remap makes a difference into corners at the UK,s 60 mph NSL.

I won't be going on track just faster road use

Floor the accelerator now and you can get to 140 mph into corners, maybe not out with them.

Better braking is good if with a fast car you take more chances overtaking and need to get in quick before over take is completed.

Obviously i am joking,

we all want to go quicker safely & stop quick and no over heating brakes in the parallel universe we drive in.

It is a valid question raised though. Given the remap improving acceleration and top speed, how are you going to drive the car differently that will affect braking? If you will be braking from higher speeds or more often or loaded up with more weight, then updating the brakes is a valid requirement. But if not, then there’s no particular need to update them

However, if you just want to then that’s a good enough reason, it’s your car. I got updated brakes partially for that reason but I’d be lying if there wasn’t a sense of vanity in there. You just have to factor the cost in.

EBC have a longstanding reputation - however they’re the only one I’ve seen with a pad break up. However, it’s anecdotal.

Ferodo, Mintex, Pagid all have fast road pad options and all decent reputations.

I have yellow stuff with BSD discs. No issues. Good pedal even from cold.

As far as OE offerings go, the stock setup is pretty competent - the discs are sizeable and it's a chunky old pad in there. The caliper is big and crude, but it works.

I made the switch to RS3 calipers but purely for reasons of feel, I'm still running plain 340mm discs.

That's a point about discs I didn't address previously. I've got Mtec drilled and grooved discs.

I've read the grooves are to funnel heat away and/or cleaning/deglazing the pad face. I've also read the vents and cross-drilled holes are more effective at that anyway

They create a whirring sound on longer heavier braking occurences which is what it is and down to taste - yo either like it or put up with it.

What I remember seeing on any 'performance road' car vehicle with not-plain discs tends to be drilled or dimpled rather than grooved. Golf R Clubsport, AMG Mercs, Audi RSs - some of the more racebred stuff probably has grooves but at the end of the day I'd say for anything that's more "sport-normal" I don't think you're getting what you pay for.
