Does anyone know if the rear ABS sensors are the same left and right? (Octavia estate TDI VRS 2014 - Manual FWD)

My left rear sensor seems to be faulty (intermittent wheel speed monitored in CarScanner App vs other wheels) & I would like to swap with the right to confirm its only the sensor.

I have a christmas tree of warning lights & messages relating to tyre monitor, ACC, Parking Sensors, StopStart.

I have read that the sensor & wheel bearing might need to be replaced (as the magnetic ring is built into the hub) so would like to test first before ordering one or both.

Yesterday I was trying to auto-adjust the handbrake tension (Press Brake pedal hard, release, 3 hard pull ups on the handbrake & then release) - it didnt really work.

The next day, I had all of these errors relating to the ABS before moving the car (most errors appeared as soon as the ignition was on).

Could I have damaged the sensor or wheel bearing by pulling the brake too hard (i dont think I did) or is it just a coincidence ??

It is my wifes car so I dont really know if there were these messages before (she says no obviously ;) )..

Since then, I have adjusted the handbrake cable - maybe max one full turn to stop the hand brake warning popping up when driving over bumps.

Otherwise, the car drives fine, the brakes don't seem to be binding or scraping or squeaking & I don't feel any play in the rear bearing or wheel.

I will try to swap them tomorrow, test the power to the sensor & see if the issue follows the wheel or sensor.

So it seems that you can swap the rear sensors as the sensor has a straight design.

I didnt swap them in the end because it was a complete faff to get the sensor off.

The bolt was completely rusted & it was difficult to fit the bit into the head.

Eventually it came out & I am still not sure if the head was a Torx or Hex fitting... (The garage said Torx but the new bolt I fitted has a hex head).

As usual the electrical connector is the most finger destroying part.

To remove the sensor itself, you need to give it a lot of force or lever with a screw driver.

The plastic body of the sensor acts to position the sensor in the correct place so has a strong interfence fit by design.

I tested the electrical connector & there was 12V at Key On so I took the chance to replace the sensor rather than try to test it first as I needed a new bolt anyway due to the state of the head of the old one.

The old sensor which failed was part number: WHT 003 864 A

The new sensor I fitted is the latest version: WHT 003 864 C

After fitting and reconnection, the ABS light & Tyre Warning Light were still illuminated.

However, after driving above 30kph both lights disappeared & there are now no faulty at all displayed in the infotainment.

I checked with Car Scanner & the Right Rear Vehicle Speed is now correctly displayed (before it was reading intermittently but mostly 0kph.

Another simple(ish) correction saving me a fair few hundred francs...!

In case it helps others who have a similar error, I was using Car Scanner to diagnose the failure & it doesnt read DTCs from the ABS module (which is where you'll find the helpful DTC saying "Rear Left Wheel Speed Sensor Electrical Error".

I had about 12 other DTCs from various modules saying "U1123 - Databus Message Missing" which is a bit misleading.

The message is not missing just not plausible.

The one DTC description which got me onto the cause was the "WheelPulseFail", "WheelImpulse" and "ESP_19: Fehlerwert im signal ESP_HL_Radgeschw"

• HL Radgeschw is german for "Rear Left WheelSpeed".

I will attach the complete log of failures as it could help someone in the future:
